Recent protests in Algeria and Sudan. Protesters and militaries are at a stand-off. A possibility that protests could move to other Arab countries as well.

  • Refers to a series of uprisings in the countries of the Arab region in 2011.
  • Protests in Tunisia in late 2010.
  • Spread to other countries including Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain and Syria.
  • Tunisia overthrew Zine El Abidine Ben Ali՚s dictatorship.
  • The country transitioned to a multi-party democracy.

Causes of the Arab Spring

  • The economic model based on patronage.
  • Popular longing for freedom from their repressive regimes.
  • The key driving force was pan-Arabist anger against the old system.
  • The protests were transitional in nature.
