The state government of Assam launched an ambitious health insurance scheme ‘Atal-Amrit Abhiyan’. It will provide coverage against several critical illnesses. It is launched by Assam’ Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Scheme is to mark the 92nd birthday of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Highlights

  • Initiatives will offer coverage against 437 illnesses in six disease groups.
  • Groups namely, cardiovascular, cancer, kidney, neo-natal, neurological conditions and burns.
  • It is an attempt of the government to make quality health care affordable to every individual member of a family.
  • Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) families, with annual income below Rs 5 lakh, are eligible for the scheme.
  • Total financial outlay of the scheme is around Rs 200 crore.
  • A laminated health card with unique identification number will be given to all the members.
  • A separate society will also be set up under the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Separate society will be responsible for administration of the scheme.

About National Health Mission

  • The Union Cabinet vide its decision dated 1st May 2013 has approved the launch of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a Sub-mission of an over-arching National Health Mission (NHM), with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) being the other Sub-mission of National Health Mission.

    • NHM has six financing components:
    • NRHM-RCH Flexipool
    • NUHM Flexipool
    • Flexible pool for Communicable disease
    • Flexible pool for Non communicable disease including Injury and Trauma
    • Infrastructure Maintenance
    • Family Welfare Central Sector component
