Assembly Election 2017 in Five States of India

The Election Commission today announced the dates and phases of elections for 5 states - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, and Goa. About 160 million people spread across five states will vote in February and March. For both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, this year will be a crucial year.

New Measures Adopted by EC for Assembly Polls

  • The EC set the campaign expenses limit per candidate at between ₹ 20 lakh and ₹ 28 lakh in all five states.
  • With the help of the Press Council of India, EC will monitor paid news.
  • Discouraging the use of environmentally hazardous materials like plastic while campaigning, the CEC advised parties to refrain from reckless use of loudspeakers and crackers.
  • Constituents will be given free voter guides, replete with colourful text and images to familiarize them with candidates and voting procedure.
  • The height of the voting compartment will be raised to 30 inches this time.

Assembly Elections 2017

  • UP will have a seven phase election, with polling on February 11, 15, 19,23, 27, March 4 and 8.
  • Manipur continues to be under a blockade and is facing law and order problems, will have a two-phase election with polling on March 4 and 8.
  • Punjab and Goa will vote on February 4 while Uttarakhand on Feb 15.
  • The state-wise notification process will begin with Punjab and Goa on January 11.
  • Elections for the Gujarat State assembly are expected to be held in November 2017.
