All regional offices have been asked by the Union Ministry of Railways to ensure complete removal of single-use plastics from all railways stations effective from 2 October 2019. The main aim is to shield the environment from menace of plastic. All plastic material with less than 50 micron thickness is to be banned except at the places where the thickness such plastic sheets impair functionality of product.

Circular Overview

  • The Railway Employees have been strictly asked to reduce, reuse and refuse plastic products. To reduce plastic footprint, the employees should use inexpensive reusable bags.

  • The Indian Railways will provide all assistance to the Vendors at Platforms to avoid use of plastic carry bags.

  • As a part of Extended Producer Responsibility, the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) has been asked to return plastic drinking water bottles.

  • Extended Producer Responsibility means to add all product related environmental costs throughout product life cycle.

  • The extended Producer Responsibility also includes providing Plastic Bottle crushing machines. A total of 1,853 plastic water bottle crushing machines will be installed at 360 major stations in the first phase.

  • From 2nd October 2019, the ban will be strictly enforced on railway and other properties across country as part of ‘Plastic Free Railway’.

IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation)

  • The IRCTC is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways and is engaged in handling catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the Indian railways.

  • With around 5,50,000 to 6,00,000 ticket bookings everyday IRCTC is the world’s second busiest with ‘Lifeline of the Nation as its tagline.

  • For domestic and foreign tourists, IRCTC also provides deluxe package tours.

  • The tourism packages provided consists of both conventional and adventure tourism.

  • To provide direct catering and tourism packages to users, Rail Tourism a new venture of Indian Railways has been launched.

  • The passengers can book tickets through e-ticketing all the day except from 11: 45 pm to 12: 20 am. IRCTC shut down its main server for 35 minutes for maintenance purpose.
