BharatNet Project

Over 65,000 gram panchayats, Centre՚s BharatNet project seems on track to achieve its 1 lakh target by March 2017. The success of Centre՚s push for digital payments is expected. Key program of government is to improve broadband penetration in India.

Highlights

  • Out of the 65,475 gram panchayats where optic fibre cable has been laid 14,569 gram panchayats across 22 states have active connectivity as on December 6.
  • PPP model should be the preferred means for implementation.
  • With long term service delivery in the vein of the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) ⟋Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models of implementation will be the preferred means of implementation.
  • Entitled to proceeds of revenue from dark fibre and⟋or bandwidth.

About National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN)

National Optical Fibre Network
  • It is an ambitious initiative to trigger a broadband revolution in rural areas.
  • Is an information super-highway through the creation of a robust middle-mile infrastructure for reaching broadband connectivity to Gram Panchayats.
  • Its aim is to connect all the 2,50, 000 Gram panchayats in the country and provide 100 Mbps connectivity to all gram panchayats (GPs) .
  • NOFN project was funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) .

Vision

  • Aims to establish, by 2017, a highly scalable network infrastructure.
  • It is accessible on a non-discriminatory basis
  • Aims to provide on demand, affordable broadband connectivity of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps.
  • Useful for all households and on demand capacity to all institutions.
  • Set up to improve telecom services in rural and remote areas of the country.
  • Objective is to facilitate the delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to the rural India.
