Bridge opened to traffic on 25th Dec. , 2018,16 years after it was announced by then PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Inauguration ceremony of bridge coincides w/94th birth anniversary of Vajpayee, who died in August, 2018. Foundation stone for Assam’s Bogibeel Bridge may have been laid in 1997, but it is only today that double-decker rail-and-road Bridge will open to traffic.

Significance of Bogibeel Bridge

  • Bridge is among infrastructure projects planned by India to improve logistics along border in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • While inaugurating Bogibeel Bridge in May 2017, PM dedicated it to musician & film-maker Bhupen Hazarika.

  • Billed as India’s longest railroad bridge, 5-km structure spans waters of mighty Brahmaputra River.

  • Bogibeel Bridge will connect Assam’s Dibrugarh & Dhemaji districts, bordering Arunachal Pradesh.

  • PM will flag off train - Tinsukia-Naharlagun Intercity Express, which will run 5 days a week.

  • W/its proximity to China border, bridge has tremendous significance for India’s defence & has been built strong enough to support movement of tanks & even fighter jet landings.

Key Facts of Bogibeel Bridge

  • It will cut travel time b/w 2 points Assam to Arunachal Pradesh by 4 hours & help avoid 170-km detour.

  • It will reduce Delhi to Dibrugarh train-travel time by about 3 hours to 34 hours as against 37 hours presently.

  • Bridge will reduce distance to Northeast region by 165 km, saving fuel worth Rs. 10 lakh per day in region.

  • 4.9 km-long Bogibeel Bridge is constructed at estimated cost of Rs. 5,900 cr.

  • Bridge has serviceable period of around 120 years.

  • Bridge is built by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC).

  • Bridge has 2-line railway track on lower deck & 3-lane road on top deck. For 1st time for Indian Railways, girder has steel floor system for railway tracks & concrete for road.
