Brahmaputra, the Unquiet River
Brahmaputra, the Unquiet River
- River Brahmaputra has changed over the years due to changes brought in by economic and natural forces.
- It originates in southern Tibet and becomes the Brahmaputra upon entering Assam through Arunachal Pradesh.
- Earthquake in 1950 brought changes in the river՚s flooding pattern.
- Over the years this river has evolved to understand the rhythms of many languages whether it is from Tibetan-Burman or Aryan origins.
- The path of the river was temporarily obstructed after an earthquake in Tibet on November 17.
- Also due to extreme pollution levels river water is turning black.
Major reasons for channel shifting
- Deposition of huge amount of sediments and silts due to the sudden drop of gradient after entering Assam.
- Heavy rainfall in Siang as well as Assam hills add huge quantum of water, resulting in regular flooding of river.
