Breakthrough Listen project detected 15 fast radio bursts (FRBs) coming from a dwarf galaxy about 3 million light years away from earth with Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia.

Total of known fast radio bursts from this strange object is 150.

## What Are Fast Radio Bursts?

• Intense radio emission burst of unknown origin with durations of milliseconds exhibiting characteristic dispersion sweep of radio pulsars.

• Discovered in 2007 by Lorimer et al. using Parkes Telescope in Australia but was observed some six years earlier, in archival data from a pulsar survey of the Magellanic Clouds- then named “Lorimer bursts

• First burst was extremely intense observed across a 288 MHz radio band near the location of the Small Magellanic Cloud.

• In 2013, Thornton et al. discovered four “Lorimer bursts” and called them Fast Radio Bursts or FRBs with brightest burst exhibiting a signature exactly as expected from true extra-terrestrial sources of radio emission.

• Until FRB is localised to a host galaxy, or confirmed at other wavelengths, their origin remains controversial.

## What is Breakthrough Listen Project (BLP)?

The Breakthrough Initiatives are programs of scientific and technological exploration, probing Universe for extraterrestrial life, looking for habitable worlds, exploring modes of travel to distant stars, and promoting one world for universal exploration. They were founded in 2015 by Yuri and Julia Milner. There are following components:

• Breakthrough Listen is a $100 million program of astronomical observations searching for evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth with all data open to the public. • Breakthrough Message is a$1 million competition to design a message representing Earth, life and humanity that could be understood by another civilization encouraging the citizens to work and think as one world.

• Breakthrough Watch is multi-million dollar program to develop technologies to find Earth-like planets in our cosmic neighborhood, which can possibly host life.

• Breakthrough Starshot is a \$100 million engineering program to demonstrate a new technology, enabling ultra-light unmanned space flight at 20 % of the speed of light- foundations for a flyby mission to Alpha Centauri within a generation.
