  • Handholds ULBs in implementing the SWM Rules

  • Online database will capture data directly from states and cities online on their progress on SBM components enhancing the robustness and transparency of Mission monitoring.

Star Rating Protocol for Cleanliness

  • Aim to promote healthy competition with star rating for garbage free cities.

  • Provide aspirational tools for cities to improve their overall cleanliness, while working towards a garbage-free status

  • The star rating protocol is different from the Swachh Survekshan ranking survey as it allows multiple cities to be awarded the same star rating

  • “Swachh Survekshan” survey in 2017 will rank 500 cities across the country based on urban sanitation.

  • Fosters healthy competition between cities for improving cleanliness standards

  • Done by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) ranking cities on cleanliness and other aspects of urban sanitation

  • In 2016 survey ranked 73 cities across the country.

  • The performance evaluation of the Swachh survekshan is conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI), an autonomous body established by Government of India in 1997 for Quality assurance in all spheres of activities including Governance.
