The strategic anti-Naxal operations command headquarters of the CRPF has been shifted from Kolkata to Chhattisgarh. In 2010, the central zone command headquarters was shifted from Raipur to Kolkata owing to logistics and connectivity issues.

  • The recent decision comes at the backdrop of ambush in Sukma district that killed 37 jawans of the paramilitary force.
  • The central zone was tasked with overseeing troops deployment across the States affected by Left Wing Extremism such as

    • West Bengal
    • Jharkhand, Bihar
    • Chhattisgarh
    • Odisha
    • Madhya Pradesh
    • Uttar Pradesh
  • It was moved to Kolkata in July 2010 for want of better rail and air links for the command office.


  • CRPF is the largest central armed police force or paramilitary force in India.
  • It functions under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India.
  • The CRPF’s primary role lies in assisting the State/Union Territories in police operations to maintain law and order and counter insurgency
  • It came into existence as the Crown Representative’s Police on 27 July 1939
  • After independence, it was made statutory after enactment of the CRPF Act, 1949
  • The mission of the Central Reserve Police Force shall be to enable the government to maintain Rule of Law, Public Order and Internal Security effectively and efficiently to preserve National Integrity & Promote Social Harmony and Development by upholding supremacy of the Constitution.
  • Apart from anti-Naxal operations, CRPF personnel also carries out several operations in situations of crisis like terrorist attacks, counter-terrorism operations, rescuing citizens during terrorist attacks among others.

  2. Riot control
  3. Counter Militancy/Insurgency operations.
  4. Dealing with Left Wing Extremism
  5. Overall co-ordination of large scale security arrangement especially with regard to elections in disturbed areas.
  6. Protection of VIPs and vital installations.
  7. Checking environmental de-gradation and protection of local Flora and Fauna
  8. Fighting aggression during War time
  9. Participating in UN Peace Keeping Mission
  10. Rescue and Relief operations at the time of Natural Calamities.
