At Commonwealth Games, teenage shooting prodigy Manu Bhaker won gold in women’s 10m air pistol event at Gold Coast, Australia while seasoned campaigner Heena Sidhu took silver. Bhaker has marked her name in India’s list of firsts.

Bhaker

  • Bhaker, 16-year-old shooting sensation from Jhajjar Haryana, gave her tremendous performance on Sunday morning at Belmont Shooting Centre.
  • Bhaker sharpened her aim at shooting range in Universal Senior Secondary School, Goria village, Jhajjar district in Haryana, 125 km from Delhi.
  • Bhakur fired 10, 10.3, 10.6 & then sensational 10.9 to put herself into lead, taking her total well past Sidhu & Australia’s Elene Galiabovitch.
  • Women’s 10m air pistol gold at ISSF World Cup earlier this year made her youngest Indian shooter to take top prize in World Cup.
  • Bhaker had tried her hand at other sports like boxing & martial arts before she eventually settled for shooting.
  • In short span of time, she defeated experienced campaigner Heena Sidhu at 61st National Shooting Championship, tournament where she won 9 gold medals over 2 days.
  • Month later, Bhaker set 2 other junior national records at Khelo India games.

Sindhu

  • 28-year-old Sidhu stormed back from face of elimination in stunning manner to claim silver w/total effort of 234.
  • She received Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) Shooter of Year award in February.
  • Heena had previous made 2 trips to Commonwealth Games in 2010 - winning gold in team 10m air pistol event & silver in individual 10m air pistol - & 2014 where she qualified for 10m final but failed to leave mark.
