CYSVAX is world’s first ever vaccine to fight against Taenia solium Tapeworms found in pigs. It was developed by Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) a subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). It has significant potential to reduce the incidence of epilepsy in humans.

  • The CYSVAX is a recombinant porcine (Pigs) Cysticercosis Vaccine with potential to beat the Cysticercosis disease parasite’s lifecycle in pigs, one of the important reasons for epilepsy in humans.

What is Cysticercosis?

  • Cysticercosis is a parasitic disease generally caused by pork tapeworm known as “Taenia solium”.
  • One of 17 neglected tropical diseases worldwide according to the WHO.
  • Zoonotic insect disease that is it involves pigs as intermediate hosts for eggs of the tapeworm Taenia solium.
  • Accidental consumption of eggs in the under-cooked pork, vegetables and greens infects humans.
  • Develops cysts in central nervous system becoming source of Neuro-cysticercosis.

Reasons for The Spread of Disease?

  • Tapeworms Taenia solium breed in open evacuation sites and unhygienic pig rearing.
  • North Uttar Pradesh and Northeastern states have reported cases of Cysticercosis.
