ISRO is getting ready to land its very first lunar rover by the end of March 2018, as part of its Chandrayaan-2 mission- the Indian government’s most ambitious moon exploration project to date.

Details of Chandrayaan-2

  • Mission is planned to be launched to the Moon by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mk II).

  • It includes a lunar orbiter, lander and rover, all developed by India.

  • Mission will use and test various new technologies and conduct new experiments.

  • Wheeled rover will move on the lunar surface and perform on-site chemical analysis with data relayed to Earth through the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.

  • Unlike Chandrayaan-1′s Moon Impact Probe, which “impacted” the Moon’s surface to land, this lander will make a soft landing to deploy the rover.

  • Technologies on lander include high-resolution camera, navigation camera, hazard avoidance camera, an 800 N throttleable liquid main engine and attitude thrusters, altimeter, velocity meter, accelerometer, and the software needed to run these components.

  • Rover’s mass will be about 20 kg and will operate on solar power, it will have:

  • Stereoscopic camera-based 3D vision providing the ground team controlling the rovers a 3D view of the surrounding terrain.

  • Kinematic traction control to negotiate the rough lunar terrain using independent steering provided on four of its wheels.

  • Control and motor dynamics using six wheels, each driven by an independent electric motor. Four of the wheels will also be capable of independent steering. 10 electric motors will be used for traction and steering.

  • If all goes well, this mission on the moon will be completed in 14 Earth days’ time it takes for the moon to make one full orbit around Earth.


  • India’s first lunar probe launched in October 2008, and operated until August 2009.

  • Mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor.

  • Provided a major boost to India’s space program- India researched and developed its own technology.

  • The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

  • On November 14, 2008, the probe crashed into the moon and got lost in lunar orbit before NASA found the “derelict spacecraft” again in 2016.

History of Moon Landings

  • Missions to the Moon have been conducted by the Soviet Union, United States, European Space Agency, Japan, India, and the People’s Republic of China.

  • The United States’ Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon, on 20 July 1969.

  • There have been six manned U. S. landings (between 1969 and 1972) and numerous unmanned landings, with no soft landings happening from 22 August 1976 until 14 December 2013.

  • Soviet Union conducted unmanned missions that deployed rovers and returned samples to the Earth.

  • In 2013, China landed its Yutu rover on Moon

  • ISRO is working on a project called ‘Aditya’ to study the sun, and a 5-year satellite- ‘XPoSat’ to study cosmic radiation.

  • Thirty-two astronauts flew in the United States’ Apollo manned lunar landing program, twenty-four left Earth’s orbit and flew around the Moon on nine missions, twelve walked on the Moon’s surface, of which six drove Lunar Roving Vehicles.
