Beijing rapped Washington for its interventions in Asia as tensions are growing between the two powers over territorial disputes in the SCS (South China Sea). Defence Minister of China criticized recent US involvement in Asia’s trouble spots.

  • China has claimed its regional rights over almost the entire South China Sea region while other countries have rival territorial claims.

  • China has built artificial islands capable of supporting military facilities in the strategically vital South China Sea to support its rights.

  • In South Korea, had agreed to deploy a missile defense system following repeated nuclear and missile tests by China’s ally North Korea.

  • US conducted freedom of navigation operations close to artificial islands built by China in the South China Sea to oppose China’s moves, as it poses a challenge to freedom of navigation.

  • US wanted to “pivot” Asia by growing its military and economic engagement with countries in region.

  • Seen as a move to contain China’s growing power.

  • International PCA (Permanent Court of Arbitration) in its pronouncement ruled that China has no legal basis over the whole SCS (July 2016).

  • However, China has rejected PCA decision.
