Once again, China has decided to block India՚s bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership. China along with few other member countries of NSG had earlier blocked India՚s membership proposal in the plenary meet of NSG in Seoul.

Nuclear Suppliers Group (NsG)

  • NSG is cartel of countries concerned with reducing nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of material.

  • China using India՚s membership bid as a bargaining card for its membership to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) blocked by Western countries.
  • China had supported Pakistan՚s membership bid (applied May 2016) to counter India՚s bid. However, many NSG members opposed Pakistan՚s membership because of its poor record.

  • The Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) is an informal and voluntary partnership among 35 countries to prevent the proliferation of missile and unmanned aerial vehicle technology capable of carrying a 500 kg payload for at least 300 km.
  • The Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) was established in April 1987 by the G7 countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States of America.
  • Prohibited materials are divided into two Categories outlined in the MTCR Equipment, Software, and Technology Annex.
  • Membership grown to 35 nations, with four additional nations, including Israel.
  • India joined on 27th of June 2016 adhering to the MTCR Guidelines.
