Chinas New Villages in Arunachal Pradesh

China has been reported of constructing three villages in Arunachal Pradesh 5 kilometres from the Bum La pass. One of the four officially agreed Border Personnel Meeting points between the Indian and the People՚s Liberation Army of China is Bum La Pass.


  • As per the satellite images dated Nov 2020, a full-fledged village has been built on the banks of the River Tsari Chu in Arunachal Pradesh՚s Upper Subansiri district.
  • This newly built village is being located just a couple of kilometres across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) .
  • Construction of village is a move to strengthen China՚s claim to the area along with the push to build civilian settlements in disputed areas.
  • China already had built a permanent construction of military barracks in this area which has been under Chinese control since 1959.
  • China doesn՚t recognise the McMahon Line saying that the McMahon Line is illegal and unacceptable.
  • According to China, the 1914 Convention held in Shimla signed by the Tibetan Convention were not having rights to do so and the same delineated the McMahon line on the map.

Other Areas of Disagreement

Line of Actual Control

  • The eastern sector extending to Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim (1346 km) .
  • The middle sector extending to Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh (545 km) .
  • The western sector in Ladakh (1597 km) .

Arunachal Pradesh

  • Arunachal Pradesh is an ‘integral and inalienable’ part of India.
  • According to China, the entire Arunachal Pradesh is South Tibet.

Implications on India

  • China might be at an advantageous position in case there is a direct standoff near Arunachal Pradesh border, the same was observed during Doklam or recent Ladakh standoff.
  • Construction of the village near the border by China would largely improve the efficiency and convenience of military personnel, material transportation and logistical supplies in the border area.

Measures Taken by India

  • To improve the infrastructure along the China border, India would spend 10 % funds of the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) .
  • Within a record span of just 27 days, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructed the Daporijo bridge over Subansiri river in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The foundation of a tunnel at Nechiphu in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh was recently laid by the Defence Minister virtually.
  • Sisseri River Bridge which is located at lower Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh connects Dibang Valley and Siang.
  • An all-weather tunnel under the Se La pass in Arunachal Pradesh is being constructed connecting Tawang to the rest of Arunachal and Guwahati.
  • Selection of 10 census towns along the India-China border has been advocated by the state government of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Indian Air Force in 2019 inaugurated resurfaced runway at India՚s easternmost Village-Vijayanagar in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Indian Army conducted exercise ‘HimVijay’ in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Bogibeel Bridge

  • India՚s longest road-rail bridge connecting Dibrugarh in Assam to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • This bridge was inaugurated in 2018.
  • This bridge would facilitate quicker movements of troops and equipment along the India-China border.
