Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was honored 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for his resolute efforts to end more than 50-year-long civil war of Colombia. Norwegian Nobel Committee recommended his name for this award.

He was selected from 376 nominated candidates, including 228 individual persons and 148 organizations.

  • He became second Colombian to win Nobel Prize after writer Gabriel Gracia Marquez won the literature Prize in 1982 and the second Latin American to receive Nobel Peace Prize after Guatemala’s Rigoberta Menchu in 1992.

Peace Agreement

  • Manuel Santos negotiated with the guerrilla (rebel) group of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
  • This discussion culminated into a proposed peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas.
  • Unfortunately Colombians rejected the peace deal when it was put to vote base in October 2016.

  • Born on 10th August 1951 in Bogota, capital city of Colombia.
  • 32nd President of Colombia,
  • Appointed for the first time in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
  • He was the defence minister from 2006 until 2009.
  • He is an economist and a journalist.
  • He was a majority shareholder of the newspaper EI Tiempo from 1913 to 2007.

Background on Colombia Civil War

  • The Colombia civil war is one of the longest civil wars (50 years) of modern times and only a remaining armed war in the South America.
  • Around 220, 000 Colombians have died close to six million people have lost their lives in this civil war.
  • Started in 1960 as a rural uprising for land rights by FARC as communist-inspired guerrilla movement.
  • FARC seeks to reduce the gulf between rich and poor through land reforms, which promote equality in the Andean country.
  • Conflict has strained relations between various leftist rebel groups, drug gangs, and right-wing paramilitaries.
  • Currently the FARC had shifted from their extreme original ideology, bringing the situation closer to resolution.
