Standing Finance Committee of Ministry of Shipping has cleared project for setting up exclusive, fully mechanized handling facility for fertilizer cargo at Deendayal Port in Kandla.

Details of New Facility for Handling Fertilizer Cargo at Kandla

  • Facility will be developed at berth number 14 of port, which is being constructed at approx. cost of Rs. 138 cr.
  • Port will further invest approx. Rs. 340 cr. for project from its internal resources. Initially, proposed facility will handle 2.60 MMTPA & subsequently this will be raised to 4.50 MMTPA.
  • In proposed project all activities, right from unloading of bulk fertilizer cargo from ships to loading of bagged fertilizer onto wagons will be fully mechanized.
  • Fertilizer cargo will be unloaded using Mobile Harbour Cranes onto Mobile Hoppers.
  • Conveyor system, along w/tipper system, will transfer cargo to cargo storage shed of 38,500 m2. Storage shed will be equipped w/40 sets of bagging & stitching units which will feed bagged cargo directly into wagons to reduce labour, movement & will optimize time & as such logistic cost will come down.

Current State at Kandla

  • Handling of fertilizer cargo at Deendayal Port involves multiple movements & agencies.
  • Mechanized facility will reduce same & ensure faster delivery of cargo to end users. It will be beneficial to farmers in terms of cost & faster delivery.

For fertilizer importers, benefits of proposed facility will be:

  • Efficient operation due to end to end mechanization

  • No contamination of fertilizer cargo due to dedicated mechanization & closed PEB Shed

  • No internal vehicular movement for transfer of cargo

  • Less number of labour required due to mechanization & no multiple handling

  • One time transfer thru equipment & conveyor

  • Mechanized Dust Suppression to avoid dust

  • Lower rake turn-around time

  • Lower vessel turn-around time

  • Lower logistics cost

Tendering work for project is in progress. Facility is expected to be commissioned by October, 2020.

Facts of Deendayal Port in Kandla

  • Kandla, known as Deendayal Port Trust is seaport in Kutch Dist. of Gujarat, near Gandhidham.

  • It is located on Gulf of Kutch.

  • It is one of major ports on west coast.

  • Kandla was constructed in 1950s as chief seaport serving western India, after partition of India from Pakistan left port of Karachi in Pakistan.

  • Port of Deendayal is located some 256 nautical miles southeast of Port of Karachi in Pakistan & over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of Port of Mumbai (Bombay).

  • Deendayal Port Trust, India’s busiest major port currently, is gearing to add substantial cargo handling capacity w/private sector participation.
