Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved procurements worth ₹ 3000 cr. It includes BrahMos cruise missiles for 2 stealth frigates to be procured directly from Russia & armored recovery vehicles for Army’s Arjun tanks.

BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

  • Indigenously designed BrahMos Missile is tested & proven supersonic cruise missile. It will form primary weapon on-board these ships.

  • Basic structures of 2 frigates are ready at Yantar shipyard in Russia & will be finished now following $1 bn deal.

  • BrahMos is joint venture b/w India & Russia. It is inducted on all frontline warships of Indian Navy.

  • BrahMos is fastest cruise missile of its class in world.

  • BrahMos missile flies almost 3 times speed of sound at Mach 2.8 & has range of 290 km.

  • Missile is named after rivers Brahmaputra & Moskva in Russia.

  • BrahMos armed Sukhoi-30 can fly 1,500 kms in direction of hostile target out at sea.

  • BrahMos is extremely difficult to be intercepted by surface to air missiles deployed on leading warships around world.

  • Range of BrahMos missile can be extended up to 400 km as certain technical restrictions were lifted after India became full member of Missile Technology Control Regime or MTCR in 2016.

  • BrahMos missile is heaviest weapon to be deployed on India’s Su-30 fighter aircraft.

  • Project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Other Approvals

  • In October 2016, India & Russia signed Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for 4 Krivak or Talwar stealth frigates - 2 to be procured directly from Russia & 2 to be built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) & commercial deals were signed recently.

  • Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) signed $500 mn deal w/Rosoboronexport of Russia for material, design & specialists assistance to build 2 frigates in India.

Armoured Recovery Vehicles

  • DAC approved procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) for Army’s Arjun main battle tanks.

  • These are designed & developed by DRDO.

  • It would be manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML).

  • ARVs ensure efficient & speedy repair & recovery of tanks during combat.
