According to weather forecasting agency Skymet in November 2019 Delhi’s air quality reaches mark of 500 with that Delhi becomes the world’s top polluted City. System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) recorded the Air Quality Index at 552 for Delhi on the same day. The Real-Time Air Quality ranking report by IQ Air Visual also marked Delhi as the most polluted city in the world. Lahore which is at second position with the record of 234 on AQI, Tashkent is in the third position it recorded185.

  • The fifth city is Kolkata at 161.
  • From the Skymet report among the top 10 highest polluted cities in the world include Delhi, Karachi, Lahore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Kathmandu.
  • Mumbai is in the ninth position with 153 on AQI.
  • To tackle this problem, Delhi’s chief minister implemented the odd-even scheme, car rationing system from November 4 - 15.

SAFAR

  • System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) was developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorological (IITM) in Pune, Maharashtra and it is operated by IMD.
  • It is India’s first air quality early warning system launched in Delhi in 2010 during Commonwealth Games.
  • It will monitor all weather parameters like temperature, humidity and wind speed rainfall and wind direction.
  • It also measure Sun’s UV index (UVI).
  • It measures pollutants like PM 2.5, PM 10, Sulphur Dioxide, Ozone, Nitrogen oxides, Carbon Monoxide.
  • It provides measurements of online automatic ultra-fine particles PM1, Black carbon and mercury these have direct impact on human health.
  • It also monitors existence harmful pollutants of Benzene, Toluene and Xylene.
  • It has LED display which produce real time air quality index on 24 x 7 basis with color coding and 72 hours of advanced forecasting.
  • Based on the air quality index on particular day health advisory and related precautions will be taken by the citizens in advance.
