For the very first time the Survey of India (SOI) will use about 300 drones to map the country. The Survey of India is responsible for mapping and surveying entire country. The Survey of India is affiliated to the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Objectives and Significance

  • One of the main objectives behind the deployment of 300 drones is to provide good high-resolution foundation maps.

  • Within next two years mapping 75 % of India’s geography which is about 2.4 million sq km of 3.2 sq km.

  • Agreements have been signed by the Survey of India with districts in Haryana (6), Karnataka (2) and Maharashtra (2). The encapsulation of every square kilometer will be mapped by drones in 2500 pictures.

  • The new maps under the project will have a 1: 500 resolution which means 1 cm on the map will represent 500 cm.

  • The settled village habitations along the villages will be mapped. The residents will be able to get property cards as well as proper legal titles to their lands.

  • The SoI or the Survey of India is the national survey and mapping organization of India headquartered at Dehradun (interim capital of Uttarakhand).

  • The Survey of India functions under the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology.

  • It was established in 1767 and is also the oldest scientific department of India.

  • To meet the needs of national security, sustainable national development and information markets it provides user focused, cost effective, and reliable and quality geospatial data, information and intelligence.

  • The Survey of India is headed by the Surveyor General of India.

  • The members belong to Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India and Army Officers from the Indian Army Corps of Engineers.
