Network of solar-powered Common Service Centres (CSCs), which act as access points for delivery of various digital services to villages in India, will be expanded to 2.50 lakh gram panchayats by year-end.

  • Positioned as strategic cornerstones of Digital India programme, digital CSC model has adopted 6 villages in country in pilot phase. Dhanauri Kalan village in Gautam Budh Nagar (UP) was the 6thdigital village in country.
  • In initial phase villages, Piyala & Dayalpur (in Haryana), Chandankiyari East & Shivbabudih (in Jharkhand) & Dhanauri Kalan & Sultanpur (in Uttar Pradesh) wer chosen for the pilot project.
  • DigiGaon or Digital Village is conceptualized as connected village where citizens can avail various e-Services of Central Govt. , State Govt. & private players in rural & remote village in country.

DigiGaons

  • These DigiGaons are projected to be change agents, promoting rural entrepreneurship & building rural capacities & livelihoods thru community participation & collective action.

  • Digital villages are equipped w/solar lighting facility, LED assembly unit, sanitary napkin unit (w/active participation on Asha & Anganwadi workers) & Wi-Fi choupal.

  • These villages would have regular CSC services like banking, health, education, financial services, & host of other services.

What Are Common Services Centres CSCs?

  • Common Services Centres (CSCs) are strategic cornerstone of Digital India programme. They are access points for delivery of various electronic services to villages in India, thereby contributing to digitally & financially inclusive society.

CSCs enable 3 vision areas of Digital India programme:

  1. Digital infrastructure as core utility to every citizen.

  2. Governance & services on demand.

  3. Digital empowerment of citizens.

  • CSCs are more than service delivery points in rural India.
  • They are positioned as change agents, promoting rural entrepreneurship & building rural capacities & livelihoods.
  • They are enablers of community participation & collective action for engendering social change thru bottom-up approach with key focus on rural citizen.
  • CSC project, which forms strategic component of National eGovernance Plan was approved by Govt. in May 2006, as part of its commitment in National Common Minimum Programme to introduce e-governance on massive scale.
  • It is one of approved projects under Integrated Mission Mode Projects of National eGovernance Plan.
