Dipa Karmakar, one of India’s leading gymnasts, scripted history by becoming 1st Indian gymnast to win gold medal in vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey on 8th July, 2018.

  • Karmakar returned to action after long layoff of almost 2 years due to knee injury. 24-year-old, who hails from Tripura, scored 14.150 to clinch gold.

Key Highlights

  • This is Dipa’s 1st medal in World Challenge Cup. She had topped qualification w/score of 13.400.

  • In her 1st attempt, Dipa had difficulty score of 5.400 while collecting 8.700 in execution for total of 14.100. She improved score in her 2nd attempt to 14.200 (5.600 + 8.600), giving her total average of 14.150.

  • Contestants who came 2nd & 3rd included Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Indonesia who clinched silver w/13.400 points & Goksu Uctas Sanli from Turkey, who took bronze w/score of 13.200.

  • Dipa had qualified in balance beam finals by finishing 3rd in qualification w/score of 11.850. She ended up finishing 4th in event.

  • She was accompanied at event by her coach, Bisheshwar Nandi.

Injury Blow to Karmakar

  • Karmakar had suffered Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury after 2016 Rio Olympics & had to undergo knee surgery.

  • She was initially confident of making comeback at Commonwealth Games but rehabilitation took more time than expected & she had to miss Gold Coast event.

Other Details of the Tournament

  • Dipa & Rakesh Patra were only 2 Indians who competed in tournament.

  • Rakesh Patra missed out on medal in men’s rings event finals, as he finished 4th w/score of 13.650.

  • Rakesh competed in parallel bars finals but finished 5th.

  • World Challenge Cup series is imp. competition in calendar of International Gymnastics Federation. There are 6 events in World Challenge Cup series this year & this is 4th leg of season.

  • Dipa & Rakesh were included in 10-member Indian gymnastics team for upcoming Asian Games.

About Dipa Karmakar

  • She was born on 9th August, 1993 in Agartala.

  • Karmakar became 1st female gymnast from India to qualify for final vault event at 2016 Rio Olympics, w/score of 14.833 on 10th August, 2016.

  • She missed out on bronze medal, finishing 4th in finals of Women’s Vault event w/overall score of 15.066.

  • She is 1st Indian female gymnast ever to compete in Olympics, & 1st Indian gymnast to do so in 52 years.

  • Karmakar is 5th woman in gymnastics history to land Produnova vault or handspring double front.

  • She 1st gained attention when she won bronze medal at 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming 1st Indian female gymnast to do so in history of Games.

  • She won bronze medal at Asian Gymnastics Championships & finished 5th at 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, creating another set of firsts for India.

  • For her commendable performance in Rio Olympics 2016, Indian Govt. honoured her w/Khel Ratna award in August 2016.

  • She received Padma Shri, India’s 4th highest civilian award, in 2017.
