The world’s first & only malaria vaccine was launched in African country of Malawi on Tuesday & as part of landmark pilot program hoping to protect in particular hundreds thousands children under 5 against 1 of world’s leading killers, according to WHO.

  • Malawi is 1/3 in Africa where RTS is to be made available to children up to 2 years age.


  • According to WHO Director-General DR. T. Adhanom Ghebreyesus, despite huge gains from bed nets and other measures to control malaria in the last 15 years, progress has stalled and even reversed in some areas.

  • The vaccine may serve as unique solution which will save 10000 of children lives.

  • It will look at reductions in children deaths, vaccine uptake, including that parents bring their children on time for four required doses & vaccine safety in context of routine use.

  • Malaria remains one of world’s leading killers, claiming life of one child every two minutes.

  • According to WHO statistics, Most of these deaths are in Africa, where more than 250,000 children dies every year.

  • Children under five are at greatest risk of its life-threatening complications. Worldwide malaria kills 435000 people a year.

  • While celebrating the launch of vaccine WHO also reminds that it’s a complementary malaria control tool added to core. Package of WHO-recommended measures for malaria prevention, including the routine use of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor spraying with insecticides & timely use of malaria testing & treatment.

What is RTS

  • RTS is the world’s first malaria vaccine.

  • The vaccine has been recommended by WHO for pilot introduction in selected areas of 3 African countries.

  • It will be evaluated for use as a complementary malaria control tool that could be added to core package of WHO-recommended preventive, diagnostic & treatment measures.

  • This vaccine will help to recover malaria in short period.

Symptoms of Malaria

  • Diarrhoea

  • Fatigue

  • Recurring bouts of chills & fever.

Primarily, malaria symptoms are similar to the flu.

Types of Malaria

  • Plasmodium vivax (PV) – most widely distributed

  • Plasmodium ovule (PO) – the rarest type

  • Plasmodium malaria (Pm) – not as widespread

  • Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) – the most dangerous
