Draft New Education Policy

2-day conference on Industry Academy Interaction for Improvement of Quality of Academics organized by the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) in June 2019 appealed to people to study, analyse and debate the Draft New Education Policy and withosut making any hasty conclusions out of it.

Reducing the load of school bags, promoting sports, inculcating morals, scientific and rationale temperament, history among others should become part of the curriculum.

Earlier the HRD Ministry recommended to each Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states which sparked a huge controversy

Overview of the Proposal

  • The draft proposal proposes expansion of the RTE Act with the aim to cover the three years of preschool before Class 1.
  • The RTE Act provides for the Right of children to free and compulsory education till completion of elementary education in a neighbourhood school.
  • The early childhood education needs to be overseen and regulated by the Ministry of HRD as part of the school system.
  • The proposal includes the private pre-schools and anganwadis that currently cater to the 3-to-6 year՚s age group.
  • A new integrated curricular framework for 3 to 8-year old has been suggested with a flexible system based on play, activity and discovery, and beginning exposure to three languages from age 3 onwards.
  • The New Education Policy could result in an upheaval in the anganwadi system which has been overseen by the Ministry of WCD for more than four decades.
