Eastern Peripheral Expressway is India’s 1st smart & green highway- a step towards solving Delhi’s traffic-congestion woes, diverting around 2 lakh vehicles passing thru national capital, cutting out pollution.

  • Expressway will consume million tonnes of fly ash from NTPC’s various thermal plants, thus minimising pollution.
  • Project has sparked possibilities for development of industrial & business sectors, & after its completion, will allow motorists to bypass Delhi for mutual transit to UP, U’Khand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, & J&K.

10 Facts About Eastern Peripheral Expressway:

  • Built at cost of nearly Rs. 11,000 cr. to decongest national capital, 135-km six-lane access-controlled expressway envisages signal-free connectivity b/w Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar (Greater Noida) & Palwal.

  • Construction cost of expressway alone is Rs. 4,420 cr. It consumed 5 lakh tonne of cement & 1 lakh tonne of steel during construction.

  • 7 interchanges are being developed & at every 500 m interval on either side of Eastern Peripheral Expressway, rain water harvesting is being developed.

  • Eastern Peripheral Expressway will divert at least 2 lakh vehicles passing thru national capital daily to this bypass. This will help in decongestion & in bringing down pollution level.

  • Expressway is equipped w/latest technology for ease. It is provided w/smart & intelligent highway traffic management system & video incident detection system. Over Speed Checking System, Weigh-in-Motion, Warning Devices, Pavement Management Systems, Fiber Optic Network & other facilities are provided.

  • In order to have uninterrupted travel experience & faster toll collection, toll plazas will be provided w/Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

  • It is reported that Eastern Peripheral Expressway will sport 36 “monuments” like Ashoka lion, Ashoka Chakra, Gateway of India, Qutab Minar, Konark Temple, Jaliyanwala Bagh, Char Minar, Lal Quila, Kirti Stambh, India Gate, Hawa Mahal etc.

  • There will be 8 solar power plants on Eastern Peripheral Expressway. It is going to be 1st one in India to have solar power for lighting on entire expressway.

  • Other facilities at expressway include petrol pumps, wash rooms, motels, shops, rest areas, restaurants, repair services etc at atleast 6 locations.

  • EPE will have vertical gardens w/solar power system & drip irrigation. Cycle track of 2.5 metre is developed on both sides of this expressway.
