The Ministry of Human Resource Development proposed to implement various schemes for the Economically Backward Class students. Citizens having annual income less than Rs. 1 lakh and who do not belong to any disadvantaged social category such as Schedule Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) have been categorized as Economically Backward Classes (EBCs) in India.

Overview

  • The scholarship amounts of Rs. 10,000/- per annum for the first three years and Rs. 20,000/- per annum for the fourth and fifth year will be provided to eligible meritorious students having family income less than Rs. 8.0 lakh per annum, for pursuing higher studies.

  • An amount of Rs. 1.30 lakh to Rs. 4.00 lakh per annum will be provided to the meritorious Students from Jammu and Kashmir having family income less than Rs. 8.0 lakh per annum, to pursue higher studies outside J&K.

  • Students having annual parental income up to Rs. 4.5 lakh is being provided full interest subsidy during the course period with an extension of one year, on taking educational loan up to Rs. 7.5 lakh.

  • The SC/ST/PH students from IIT shall get complete fee waiver.

  • Students from IIT with family income less than Rs. 1 lakh shall get full remission of the fee.

  • Assistance in the form of remission of 2/3rd of the fee will be provided to the other economically backward students studying in IIT whose family income is between Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh per annum.

  • Interest subvention on the education loans for all students admitted for undergraduate and the five year integrated degree programmes is being provided under the Vidyalaxmi Scheme.

  • The Government has issued orders providing 10 percent reservation to EWS categories in admission to educational institutions as per the Constitution’s 103 Amendment Act 2019 for proper advancement of Economically Weaker Sections of the society without disturbing the existing entitlements for SC/ST and OBC categories.

  • Remedial Coaching for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) & Minority Community Students.

  • Coaching for NET/SET for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) & Minority Community Students.

  • Coaching Classes for Entry into services for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) & Minority Community Students are also being given.

  • Through PFMS and scholarship the interest subsidy is being released through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode the payments for these schemes are being processed online.
