Indian Railways organized programme on Ethics in Public Governance & launched “Mission Satyanishtha” at National Rail Museum in New Delhi. This mission is 1st of its kind event held by any govt. organization.

Key Details of Mission Satyanishtha

  • Mission Satyanishtha aims at sensitizing all railway employees about need to adhere to good ethics & to maintain high standards of integrity at work.

Major Objectives of Mission Satyanishtha

  • To train every employee to understand need & value of ethics in Personal & Public life.

  • To deal w/ethical dilemmas in life & Public Governance.

  • To help understand policies of Indian Railways on ethics & integrity & employee’s role in upholding same.

  • To develop inner governance thru tapping inner resources.

Code of Ethics in Public Sector

  • Code of Ethics applies to all public sector employees, including chief executive officers, chief employees & ministerial staff, & public sector bodies covered by “Public Sector Management Act 1994”, which includes boards established under their own legislation.

  • Min. standards of conduct & integrity to be compiled by all public sector bodies & employees are expressed in following principles:

    • Personal Integrity: To act w/care & diligence & make decisions that are honest, fair, impartial & timely; & consider all relevant information.

    • Relationship w/others: To treat people w/respect, courtesy, & sensitivity; & recognize their interests, rights, safety, & welfare.

    • Accountability: To use resources of state in responsible & accountable manner that ensures efficient, effective & appropriate use of human, natural, financial & physical resources, property & information.

Need of Such Ethics Promotion in Public Administration

  • Promoting ethical conduct: Promoting integrity means developing & maintaining organizational culture or environment that supports ethical conduct.

  • Corruption free India: Recent instances of corruption involving various govt. departments is biggest reason behind such initiatives by Govt. to train its officials on ‘ethic & value in public governance’ to ensure transparency & keep graft at bay.

  • High Standards: It is imp. for all railway servants to maintain impeccable conduct & integrity in course of their duties. It is vital in context of fact that issues of corruption, ethics, integrity, & probity in public life are matter of concern. Mission Satyanishtha will stress on need to adhere ethics to maintain high standards of probity in public sector.
