Bharat Net

  • BharatNet also Bharat Broadband Network Limited, is a Telecom infrastructure provider.

  • Founded: 25 February 2012

  • A highly scalable network infrastructure accessible on a non-discriminatory basis.

  • Objective: To facilitate delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to the rural India.

  • Three-phase implementation of the BharatNet project:

    • First phase: across 13 states and UTs was completed in December 2017.

    • Second phase: to be completed by 31 March 2019 (unofficial target date 31 Dec 2018).

    • Third phase: Completed from 2019 to 2023

Locky Ransomware and Xafecopy

  • Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued alert Locky ransomware that can lock computers and demand ransom for unlocking them.

  • Advanced malware uses cryptoviral extortion encrypting victim’s files, making them inaccessible.

  • Ransomware is malicious software from cryptovirology threating to publish the victim’s data or perpetually block access to computer system or data unless a ransom is paid.

  • Example: “WannaCry worm”, traveled automatically between computers without user interaction.

  • Locky Ransomware circulated through spam campaign (spam emails) with common subject lines first surfaced in 2016.

Digitization of Museum Collections and Impressions of Inscriptions on Paper

  • Museum collections are being digitized under Scheme for Financial Assistance for Digitization of Museum Collections with Government so far providing financial assistance to 18 museums.

  • Scheme aims: To develop a National Database of all art objects and antiquities available with museums at various levels i. e. National level, State level, regional, and local museums to provide enhanced accessibility to scholars, researchers and informed visitors.

  • Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) plans to digitize all impressions of Inscriptions in a systematic way.

First NIC-CERT Launched by MeitY to Prevent, Predict Cyber-attacks on Government Utilities

  • Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched first NIC-CERT, a setup of National Informatics Centre (NIC) to prevent and predict cyber-attacks on government utilities.

  • NIC-CERT designed for early detection and mitigation of cyber-attacks on government networks.

  • NIC-CERT will have advanced tools to correlate events generating canvas of attack surface and identify vulnerabilities and possible exploits.

MeitY Launches Cyber Surakshit Bharat Initiative

  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched Cyber Surakshit Bharat initiative to strengthen cybersecurity ecosystem in India in line with Government’s vision for a ‘Digital India’.

  • Launched in association with National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and industry partners.

  • Cyber Surakshit Bharat is first public-private partnership initiative.

  • It will leverage the expertise of IT industry in cyber security.

  • Objective of cyber Surakshit Bharat is:

    • To spread awareness about cyber-crime.

    • Building capacity for safety measures for chief Information Security officers and frontline IT staff across all government departments.

Saposhi: Threat of New Malware Looms over Cyberspace

  • Cybersecurity agencies detected a new malware called Saposhi that can take over electronic devices and use them for Distributed Denial of Service attacks.

  • Saposhi Malware is capable of taking over electronic devices and turning them into bots (device taken over by malware) which can then be used for any purpose, including DDoS attacks which, with enough firepower, can cripple entire industries.

  • Malwares like Saposhi, Reaper and Mirai are primarily are used for DDoS attacks.

Internet Security Threat Report: India third most vulnerable country to cyber threats

  • According to recently published Internet Security Threat Report, India emerged as 3rd most vulnerable country in terms of risk of cyber threats, such as malware, spam and ransomware in 2017.

  • India moved up by one place over previous year.

  • The report was published by security solutions provider Symantec.

  • The global threat ranking of countries was based on 8 metrics viz. malware, spam, bots, phishing, network attacks, web attacks, ransomware and cryptominers.

  • United States (with 26.61 % global threats) was most vulnerable country to such cyber-attacks, followed by China (10.95%) in 2017.

Pratyush, India’s Fastest Supercomputer Unveiled

  • India’s fastest and first multi-petaflops (PF) supercomputer named Pratyush was unveiled at Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).

  • The supercomputer has been named as ‘Pratyush’ meaning Sun.

  • One petaflop is a million billion floating point operations per second and is a reflection of the computing capacity of a system.

  • Machines will be installed at two government institutes:

    • 4.0 petaflops HPC facility at IITM, Pune

    • 2.8 petaflops facility at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, Noida.

India Joins 5G Ecosystem and First Ever India Mobile Congress 2017

  • More than 100 leading global companies are expected to participate in India’s first ever Mobile Congress 2017.

  • Organized from 27th September to 29th September 2017.

  • Led by Department of Telecom as the nodal ministry.

  • Organized by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) - the industry association of mobile and telecom operators and internet companies.

  • Objective: To display, discuss, unveil, imbibe, educate, and recognize importance of the telecommunications, mobile, internet, connectivity, and digital services sector.

IIT-Delhi Installs India’s First 5G Lab

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) -Delhi installed Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) lab on campus for standardisation, R&D and manufacturing of 5G equipment.

  • It will be the first of its kind 5G lab in India.

  • It has been set-up at Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management.

  • Lab will serve as 5G base station prototypes that will be used to test and verify algorithms and also develop complete 5G base station.

  • It will help in manufacturing of 5G base stations in India with support and collaboration from industry.

  • 5G is wireless communication technology based on third-generation partnership project (3GPP).

Balong 5G01 Chipset: Huawei Unveils World’s First 5G Chip

  • Chinese electronic device and smartphone maker Huawei has unveiled Balong 5G01, world’s first 5G chip at Mobile World Congress 2018 held in Barcelona, Spain.

  • The company also showed its f5G-ready CPE equipment.

  • The chip has been designed and manufactured by Huawei.

Scientists Develop Terahertz Transmitter Capable of Sending Data 10 Times Faster Than 5G

  • Scientists developed terahertz (THz) transmitter technology.

  • It is a next generation system which can transmit digital data over 10 times faster than 5G networks.

  • It will pave transmitting digital data at a rate exceeding 100 gigabits per second (gbps) with a single channel using 300-gigahertz band.

  • The THz band is a new and vast frequency resource expected to be used for future ultrahigh-speed wireless communications.

  • Terahertz wireless is high-data-rate minimum-latency communications.

Mihir: High Performance Computing Facility

  • Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) inaugurated high performance computer system (HPC) or supercomputer Mihir (meaning sun) at National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida.

  • HCP will provide facility for improving weather/climate forecasts.

  • It is country’s largest HPC facility in terms of peak capacity and performance.

NITI Aayog Clears Six Proposals for High-Tech Public Transport

  • NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog approved six public transport proposals conditional on trial runs and safety measures before commercial operations.

  • Metrino: Driverless cars similar to pod taxis with safety measures been successfully tested.

  • Pod Taxis: Cable cars carrying a small group of 4 - 6 passengers.

  • Hyperloop: Hyperloop successfully completed its first full system test in the United States - travel free of air resistance or friction conveying people or objects at high speed while being very efficient.

  • Stadler Buses: It is a swiss-rail company setting up manufacturing units in India for building energy efficient rail coaches.

  • Freight Rail Road: Freight railroad will have elevated corridors built with rail lines, which will also accommodate freight trucks

  • Hybrid Buses: Hybrid buses a combination of combustion and electric engines.

Inauguration of Andhra Pradesh Fiber Grid Project

  • Andhra Pradesh Fibre Grid project officially launched on 27th Dec 2017 for providing affordable high-speed internet service to every household in the state at a nominal rate.

  • Fibre Grid project also termed as Triple Play 2 Services.

  • Envisages to provide internet, television and telephone services to more than one lakh households in the state at a nominal price.

  • Internet services provided under this project will be available at very high speed of 15Mbps to 100Mbps.

  • Television services under this project will provide infotainment with 250 plus channels.

  • Telephone services under this project will be completely rental-free.

Rajasthan First State with Hindi E-Mail IDs

  • Rajasthan was first state in India to launch free email addresses in Hindi for its residents.

  • The facility will be available at name@rajasthan. bharat (in Devanagari script).

  • Aims:

    • To increase participation of people towards e-governance

    • To ensuring maximum government facilities in vernacular language.

  • Unicode Standard provides a unique number for every character representing languages and symbols in all major operating systems, search engines, browsers, laptops, and smart phones - plus the Internet and World Wide Web (URLs, HTML, XML, CSS, JSON, etc. ).
