India, Argentina Sign MoU for Co-Operation in Nuclear Energy

Argentina has signed MoU to boost cooperation in sector of nuclear energy. MoU signed was signed b/w Dept. of Atomic Energy, India & National Atomic Energy Commission, Argentina.

Features of MoU

  • Argentina has expertise in building small-capacity reactors & it is looking to work w/India in some 3rd country in tripartite projects.

  • MoU for cooperation w/I framework of Global Center for Nuclear Energy Partnership would bolster institutional linkages in civil nuclear research, development & capacity building.

  • MoU will aid in enhancing & exploring cooperative ventures in area of nuclear power & its societal uses in health, agriculture, industrial application, training & capacity building.

Nuclear Ties between India and Argentina

  • In 2010 India & Argentina had signed an agreement for cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

  • INVAP which is Argentinean Company is working on Fission Molly Project to build a molybdenum plant in Mumbai. Plant would primarily focus on creating isotopes. Argentina is exporter of some nuclear components used in Indian power reactors.

Argentina has signed agreement Framework Agreement of International Solar Alliance.

Signatories of agreement include India, France, Australia, UAE, UK, Japan amongst others. Argentina is 72nd country to sign Framework Agreement of International Solar Alliance.

International Solar Alliance

  • ISA aims to provide a common platform to address specific solar technology deployment needs of solar resource-rich countries located b/w Tropic of Cancer & Tropic of Capricorn.

  • Availability of abundance of solar energy in these countries can be utilised to generate cost-effective solar power to address challenges of absence of universal energy access, energy equity & affordability.

  • ISA will not duplicate efforts that other bodies like International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), International Energy Agency (IEA), Renewable Energy Policy Network for 21st Century (REN21), United Nations bodies, bilateral organizations which are currently engaged in. Rather it will establish networks & develop synergies w/them & supplement their efforts in a sustainable & focused manner.

  • ISA is 1st body that will have a secretariat in India. India plays significant role in alliance in terms of being a host & major contributor in achieving target of 1 TW of solar energy by 2030. W/target to produce 100 GW of solar energy by 2022, India would account for 10th of ISA’s goal.

India-Spain hold Bilateral Meeting

Indian External Affairs Minister held a bilateral meeting w/her counterpart from Spain.

India South Korea sign 7 Agreements to step-up cooperation

  • MoU was signed b/w Korean National Police Agency & Ministry of Home Affairs to enhance cooperation b/w law enforcement agencies of 2 countries & combat trans-border & international crimes.

  • Joint agreement was signed for releasing a joint stamp, commemorating Princess Suriratna (Queen Hur Hwang-ok), a legendary Princess of Ayodhya, who went to Korea in AD 48 & married King Kim-Suro.

  • Agreement was signed to continue operations of Korea Plus organisation that facilitates investments by Korean companies in India. Korea Plus operationalised in June 2016 comprises representatives from Ministry of Industry, Trade & Energy of South Korea, Korea Trade-Investment & Promotion Agency (KOTRA) & Invest India.

  • Agreement to promote collaboration among start-ups & set up Korea Start-up Centre (KSC) in India to commercialise ideas, technologies & designs of start-up companies.

  • Agreement b/w Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) & Prasar Bharti to facilitate broadcast of DD India Channel in South Korea & KBS World Channel in India.

  • Agreement on fisheries & aquaculture for strengthening cooperation by encouraging exchanges, organising training workshops & development & utilisation of marine science & technology in fields of fisheries & aquaculture.

IOC Suspends India from Hosting Global Sporting Events

International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended all discussions w/India regarding hosting of global sporting events in backdrop of denial of visas to 2 Pakistani Shooters.

Pakistani shooters were supposed to participate in 25m rapid fire pistol event in ISSF World Cup.

Contents of IOC statement

  • IOC notes that Indian govt. authorities have failed to grant entry visa for Pakistani delegation to participate in ISSF World Cup which was qualification competition for Tokyo Olympic Games to be held in 2020.

  • Keeping in mind interests of other 500 athletes from 61 countries participating in other events of ISSF World Cup, IOC has withdrawn recognition of 25m rapid fire pistol event & not whole World Cup.

  • Denial of visa for Pakistani shooters is against Fundamental Principles of Olympic Charter.

  • IOC Executive Board has decided to suspend all discussions w/India regarding potential applications for hosting future sports & Olympic-related events until clear written guarantees are obtained from Indian govt. to ensure entry of all participants in compliance w/rules of Olympic Charter

  • Tensions due to Pulwama Terrorist Attack & alleged role of Pakistan based groups behind attack has deteriorated bilateral relations. This is having a spillover effect on arena of sports. There are demands for withdrawing Indian team from match against Pakistan in cricket world cup.

Alliance of Champions was launched by then Swedish Health Minister Gabriel Wikstrom at 2015 World Health Assembly. Alliance of Champions consisted of health ministers of 14 countries aimed to promote “political awareness, engagement & leadership” on AMR.
