  • It aims to overcome long delays in imports and address problem of dwindling stockpile.

  • It is claimed to be biggest ever initiative for indigenisation of ammunition.

  • Union Government has formed Defence Planning Committee (DPC), a new integrated institutional mechanism that will drive country’s military and security strategy and guide defence equipment acquisitions.

  • It will be under the chairmanship of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

  • The committee will be a permanent body and it will prepare draft national security strategy besides undertaking strategic defence review and formulating international defence engagement strategy.

Pakistan Successfully Test Fires Enhanced Version of Babur Cruise Missile

  • Pakistan successfully test fired Babur Weapon System-1 (B), an enhanced version of indigenously-built Babur cruise missile.

  • The cruise missile is important part of Pakistan’s strategic deterrence.

  • It is an unmanned self-propelled (till the time of impact) guided missile.

  • The missile has been named after the first Mughal emperor Babur.

  • It is designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high precision.

ABUR III: Pakistan Tests Nuclear-capable, Submarine-launched Missile

  • Pakistan successfully test-fired its indigenously designed and built nuclear-capable, submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM) Babur III.

  • Missile was fired from underwater dynamic platform and successfully engaged its target with precise accuracy, meeting all the flight parameters.

  • Babur-III is the naval variant of the land-based Babur-II.

  • Missile is capable of delivering various types of payloads including nuclear.

  • Missile has strike range of 450 km.

  • Babur-III missile provides Pakistan’s military credible second strike capability.

Indian Army inks MoU with Axis Bank on Defence Salary Package -

  • Indian Army has signed Memorandum of Undertaking (MoU) with Axis Bank on Defence Salary Package.
  • The first MoU between Axis Bank and Indian Army was signed in 2011 and was renewed in March 2015.
  • The current MoU is tailor-made to suit e requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families.

  • Recently, Indian Army had also signed similar MoU with HDFC bank.

  • Under the current MoU, Indian Army personnel will get free personal accident death cover and free permanent total disability cover of Rs. 30 lakh apart from benefits.

LCU L53: Indian Navy Inducts Third Landing Craft Utility at Port Blair

  • Indian Navy inducted Landing Craft Utility (LCU) INLCU L53 at Port Blair.

  • LCU L53 is the third ship in series of 8 Mark IV LCU vessels built.

  • Designed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata for Navy.

  • First ship of the series was commissioned in 2016.

  • LCU L53 MK-IV ship is amphibious ship with displacement of 830 Tons.

  • It can sail through sea at speed of 15kt.

  • It is capable of carrying 160 troops and transporting 145 tons of military equipment.

Boeing, HAL, Mahindra Tie up to Build F/A-18 Super Hornet Fighter Jet in India

  • Three companies entered into agreement to manufacture fighter aircraft F/A-18 Super Hornet in India.

  • This three companies are:

    • Boeing India subsidiary of US aerospace manufacturer Boeing

    • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)

    • Mahindra Defence Systems

  • 3 companies exchanged MoA for Make in India fighter at on-going ‘DefExpo’ in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • If they win contract in above one of the deal, a JV company will be floated over next few months for design and production of aircraft.

Desert Tiger 5: UAE and Malaysia Conclude Joint Military Exercise

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia concluded joint military exercise “Desert Tiger 5”

  • Aimed: At sharing expertise and enhancing joint military actions in Dubai, UAE.

  • Implemented within framework of UAE leadership’s continued desire to support and create unique partnerships between both countries in all areas.

  • Highlighted the success of plans to build their skills and capacities of armies of both countries.

Sahyog - Hyeoblyeog 2018: India, South Korea Joint Anti-piracy, Search and Rescue Exercise

  • India, South Korea joint anti-piracy, search and rescue exercise ‘Sahyog- Hyeoblyeog 2018’ was conducted in Bay of Bengal off the Chennai coast in Tamil Nadu.

  • Exercise was conducted between Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Korean Coast Guard (KCG).

  • As part of proposed establishment of MoU between them to improve maritime security in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

  • KCG had deployed its lone ship BADARO.

  • KCS ship took part in this search and rescue exercise.

  • ICG had deployed Dornier aircraft along with ICG Shaurya, Rani Abbakka, C-423, C-431.

GSL Delivers Second AOPV to Sri Lankan Navy Ahead of Schedule

  • Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) delivered 2nd Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) to Sri Lanka Navy.

  • This was overall the 4th Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) delivered in current financial year.

  • The vessel is the largest and most advanced ship in Sri Lankan Navy fleet.

  • Keel of the vessel was laid in May 2015 and was launched in May 2017.

  • It was completed and delivered vessel 25 Days ahead of contractual schedule.

C-437: Indian Coast Guard Commissions Interceptor Boat

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned interceptor boat ICGS C-437 at Porbandar, Gujarat as part of its efforts to strengthen coastal security.

  • It shall be based at Jakhau under administrative and operational control of commander Coast Guard Region (North West).

  • Interceptor boat is 27.8m long.

  • It has displacement capacity of 106 tonnes and has maximum speed of 45 knots.

  • Advanced navigational and communication equipment with capability to respond to any maritime situation.

C-17 Globemaster: IAF for First Time Lands Its Largest Transport Aircraft at Arunachal Pradesh’s Tuting Airfield

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) for 1st time flawlessly landed its largest transport US-manufactured aircraft, C-17.

  • Globemaster at strategic Tuting Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in Arunachal Pradesh is close to Chinese border.

  • C-17 carried out operations mission and airlifted 18 tons of load after trial landing.

  • C-17 is US-manufactured transport aircraft.

  • Commonly used to perform strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world along with medical evacuation and airdrop duties.

  • It is 174 feet long and has wingspan of about 170 feet (52 m).

Samvedna 2018: IAF’s First Multilateral HADR Air Exercise in South Asia

  • Samvedna 2018, the first multilateral Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise of Indian Air Force (IAF) in association with South Asian Region nations was held off the coast of Kerala.

  • Multilateral exercise was spearheaded by IAF and conducted by Southern Air Command (SAC).

  • It involved representatives from air forces of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and UAE.

  • Objective: To galvanise all stakeholders in synergising unified HADR efforts.

  • Broad format of exercise will include ground training and flying exercise.

Gulf Shield 1 Military Exercise of 23 Countries Held in Saudi Arabia

  • Gulf Shield – 1 military exercise of 23 countries including Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states was held in Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia.

  • Organised by Ministry of Defence of Saudi Arabia.

  • The one month exercise was largest military drill in region as it saw participation of participation of ground, naval and air forces of participating countries.

  • Aimed: To exchange expertise in fields of planning, organizing, and implementing different training activities.

MILES-18: First Ever Multi-nation Naval Exercise at Sea Held in Andaman

  • MILES-18, first-ever multi-nation naval exercise at sea was held at the Andaman sea.

  • Three days exercise was conducted as part of 10th edition of MILAN 2018.

  • Organised by Andaman Nicobar naval command to expand regional cooperation and combat unlawful activities in critical sea lanes.

  • Theme: ‘Friendship Across the Seas’

  • 11 naval ships of 8 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand) and 9 Indian ships participated in MILES-18.

India-US Team Test-fires M777 Ultra-light Howitzers in Pokhran

  • Joint investigation committee (JIC) comprising US and Indian officials has test-fired M777 ultra-light howitzers (ULH) at Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan.

  • Team will review results of this test soon.

  • Test was conducted in the wake of accident during its trial in September 2017.

  • During September 2017 trial firing, the projectile bursted in barrel of howitzers.

  • M777 Ultra-Light Howitzers (ULH) artillery Guns:

    • Manufactured by BAE Systems’ Global Combat Systems division.

    • Weighs 4, 100 kg and can be easily transported by helicopters.

    • Effective firing range of 24 km.

ICG C-162: Bharati Defence Delivers Interceptor Boat to Coast Guard

  • Bharati Defence and Infrastructure Ltd (BDIL) delivered high-speed interceptor boat ICG C-162 to Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at BDIL jetty in Mangaluru, Karnataka.

  • It is 5th interceptor boat delivered by BDIL’s Mangaluru shipyard to ICG.

  • 6th boat will be delivered after three-and-a-half months of delivery of the 5thboat.

  • Vessel will be based at Kochi, Kerala and will be used for patrolling purposes.

  • It can accommodate 11 crew members.

Paschim Lehar: Tri-service Maritime Exercise Conclude

  • Tri-service maritime exercise Paschim Lehar conducted by Indian Navy concluded off western coast in Arabian Sea.

  • Objective: To build interoperability between Indian Navy, Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard.

  • Exercise enabled testing and revalidation of operational plans and manoeuvres in a hostile maritime scenario on India’s Western seaboard.

  • It also witnessed enhanced participation by Indian Air Force (IAF) planes, in coordinated flying missions with Indian Navy’s air assets.

Dhanush Missile Successfully Test Fired

  • Nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Dhanush ballistic missile successfully test-fired from naval ship off Odisha near Paradip in the Bay of Bengal.

  • Missile test was carried out by Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

  • Tri-services military command that controls all of India’s nuclear weapons and their associated delivery systems.

  • Dhanush missile is also known as Prithvi-III.

  • It is naval variant of indigenously-developed Prithvi-II missile.

First Night Trial of Prithvi-II Missile Successfully Conducted

  • First night trial of nuclear-capable surface-to-surface short-range ballistic Prithvi-II missile.

  • It was successfully conducted from a defence facility off Odisha coast.

  • It is India’s first developed indigenously and inducted indigenous surface-to-surface strategic missile.

  • Developed missile mounted on Mobile Tatra transporter-erector Launcher (MTL).

  • It was test fired from launching complex III (LC-III) of Integrated Test Range (ITR).

  • It was equipped with state of art guidance system and was fired in real time situation.

DAC Approves Procurement of BMP-2 Infantry Combat Vehicles and Survey Training Vessel

  • Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) gave approval to procure BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles for Indian Army and survey training vessel for Indian Navy at cost of Rs. 1, 850 crores.

  • DAC is Defence Ministry’s highest decision-making body on procurement.

  • Number of combat infantry vehicles to be procured through this contract is 110 at a cost of Rs. 1, 125 crores.

  • Cost of the ship will be about Rs. 626 crores.

  • It will be constructed at Indian shipyard under Buy Indian-IDDM category of Defence Procurement Procedure.

Avani Chaturvedi: First Woman Fighter Pilot to Fly Fighter Jet

  • Flying officer Avani Chaturvedi (24) created history by becoming first Indian woman pilot of Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • She completes a solo flight in a MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft.

  • Achieved this feat by completing half-an-hour long solo flight in Russian-origin jet in the skies over Jamnagar Air Base, Gujarat.

  • Avani is from Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh and was born on 27 October 1993.

  • This is a major milestone in training of a fighter pilot.

  • First time Indian woman has flown a fighter aircraft solo.

Lamitye 2018: India, Seychelles conduct military exercise to fight counter insurgency, piracy

  • 8th edition Lamitye 2018, bilateral military exercise between Indian Army and Seychelles People’s Defence Force was held at Mahe Island in Seychelles archipelago.

  • Seychelles archipelago falls on one of most important and busiest sea transport routes of the world in Indian Ocean.

  • Lamitye exercise is conducted biennially between Indian and Seychelles.

  • 2018 aim Lamitye was fighting insurgency, terrorism and piracy threats.

J-20: China Puts Stealth Fighter into Combat Service Xcz

  • China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) commissioned its new generation J-20 fourth-generation stealth fighter into combat service.

  • China became 2nd country in world to commissioned domestically developed stealth aircraft after US.

  • J-20 is China’s fourth-generation medium and long-range fighter jet.

  • It is single-seat, twinjet, all-weather, and stealth fighter aircraft.

  • Developed by China’s Chengdu Aerospace Corporation for PLAAF.

Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological Systems Inaugurated at INS Garuda

  • Indian Navy unveiled Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS) at INS Garuda, naval air station located in Kochi, Kerala.

  • It is overall 4th air station installed with this integrated system.

  • IAAMS is ambitious project of Indian Navy to modernise Meteorological infrastructure of 9 Naval Air Stations (NAS).

  • It is expected to bring accuracy in weather monitoring mechanism in Indian Navy.

  • It has a special alarm feature that alerts the duty staff during abnormal change of weather parameters that may affect safe flying operations.

INS Karanj: Third Submarine of Scorpene Class Launched

  • Indian Navy launched Scorpene submarine INS Karanj at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • It is the 3rd Scorpene class submarine built by MDL under ambitious Project 75 of Indian Navy.

  • INS Karanj has been named after older submarine as per Indian naval tradition that was in operation from 1969 to 2003.

  • Overall length of 67.5 metres and height of about 12.3 metres.

  • Served country for 34 years and was also part of operations in 1971.

VINBAX: Indian, Vietnam hold first military exercise in Jabalpur

  • India-Vietnam Bilateral Army Exercise (VINBAX-2018) was conducted at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

  • First military exercise between the two countries.

  • Six day-long military exercise (from January 29 to February 3, 2018) conducted as part of joint training undertaken with friendly foreign countries by Indian Army.

  • VINBAX 2018 was Table Top Exercise to carry out training for Peace Keeping Operations under United Nations (UN) mandate.

Alpha Design Technologies Wins Firing Simulator Order from India Army

  • Alpha Design Technologies Ltd. signed Rs. 45-crore deal with Ministry of Defence to supply indigenous simulators for gunnery and missile firing from BMP II vehicles to Indian Army.

  • 57 simulators will be manufactured at company’s Bengaluru facility.

  • It will be supplied to Indian Army over two years period.

  • BMP II is a Soviet-origin amphibious infantry fighting vehicle.

  • Presently, Indian Army firing personnel train fully on actual BMP vehicles.

  • Alpha Design Technologies Ltd is mid-size company focusing on defence electronics products.

OPV Vijaya: Indian Coast Guard Patrol Vessel Launched

  • Second indigenously built offshore patrol vessel (OPV) named Vijaya built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Shipyard for Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was launched at Kattupalli Shipyard, Tamil Nadu.

  • It is expected to be inducted into service by September 2018 after trials on equipment.

  • OPV is 98 metre long and 14.8 metres wide with gross tonnage of 2, 100 tonnes.

  • Ship is fitted with 2 units of diesel driven engines of 9, 000 kw each with low fuel consumption.

  • It is equipped with state of art radar, navigational and communication system.

Rizhao: China Commissions New Missile Frigate

  • China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy commissioned Rizhao.

  • It is a new missile frigate, in a naval port in Dalian, China.

  • It is China’s indigenous missile frigate named after Rizhao city in Shandong Province of China.

  • Rizhao missile frigate is 140 metres long and 16 metres wide.

  • It was designed and made in China.

  • It has a displacement of nearly 4, 000 tonnes.

  • It was launched in April 2017.

  • Frigates are naval vessels intermediate between corvettes and destroyers.

Indian Navy Decommissions INS Nirbhik and INS Nirghat Warships

  • Indian Navy decommissioned INS Nirbhik and INS Nirghat warships at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai (Maharashtra), after glorious 30 and 28 years respectively in the service of the nation.

  • During their glorious service over almost 3 decades.

  • These ships participated in numerous operations including Operations Parakram and Vijay.

  • INS Nirbhik and INS Nirghat in their new avatars commissioned at Poti in erstwhile USSR (now in Russia) in December 1987 and December 1989 respectively.

Charlie-435: Indian Coast Guard Commissions Patrol Vessel

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned Charlie-435, a state-of-the-art patrol vessel at Karaikal in Puducherry.

  • Commissioned by Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy with commissioning of Charlie-435, the Coast Guard station at Karaikal now has five vessels.

  • ‘Charlie-435’ is equipped with modern navigation and communication system.

  • Great help in rescuing fishermen who go adrift in sea due to bad weather.

Ajeya Warrior-2017: Indo-UK Combined Military Exercise Held in Rajasthan

  • Combined Military exercise ‘Ajeya Warrior- 2017’ between India and UK was held at Mahajan Field Firing Range near Bikaner of Rajasthan.

  • It was third joint military exercise between India and UK.

  • First exercise was conducted in 2013 at Belgaum, Karnataka.

  • Second exercise was held in 2015 in UK.

  • Objective: To increase mutual cooperation and coordination between two countries.

IMMSAREX 2017: International Multilateral Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise Held in Bangladesh

  • International Multilateral Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (IMMSAREX) 2017 was held in Bangladesh from November 26 to 28 2017.

  • Exercise is taking place under the aegis of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS).

  • Inaugurated by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.

  • IONS launched by India Navy in February 2008. It is regional forum of Indian Ocean littoral states.

DANX-17: Defence of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Exercise Concludes

  • DANX-2017: Defence of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Exercise

  • It was conducted under aegis of Andaman & Nicobar Command from 20 to 24 November 2017.

  • Objective: To practice and validate procedures and drills of all Command forces aimed at defending strategic Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

IMBAX 2017: India-Myanmar Joint Army Exercise Begins in Meghalaya

  • IMBAX 2017: India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise 2017

  • First IMBAX 2017 was held at Joint Warfare Centre at the Umroi Joint Training Node in Meghalaya.

  • Conducted by Army’s RED HORNS DIVISION under aegis of GAJRAJ CORPS.

  • Aimed: Building and promoting closer relations with armies of the neighbouring countries.

Sampriti 2017: Indo-Bangladesh Joint Military Exercise Held in Mizoram

  • SAMPRITI 2017: Joint Indo-Bangladesh Training Exercise

  • It was culminated at Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare School, Vairengte in Mizoram.

  • Aimed: To strengthen and broaden the aspects of interoperability and cooperation between Indian and Bangladesh Armies.

  • It was 7th edition of exercise in SAMPRITI series.

Indian Army Releases Integrated Quarter Master Package Software Application

  • Indian Army launched Integrated Quarter Master Package (IQMP) softwareapplication for automating various logistics related functions of an Army Unit.

  • IQMP: Web based software developed by Army Software Development Centre in association with TCS Ltd.

  • Replace numerous legacy applications such as ‘Vastra’ and ‘Quarter Master Package’.

PRABAL DOSTYK 2017: Indo – Kazakhstan Joint Exercise Begins

  • “PRABAL DOSTYK – 2017”: The bilateral military exercise between India and Kazakhstan began at Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh.

  • ‘Prabal Dostyk’ means ’Robust Friendship’.

  • Second edition of the joint military training exercise between both countries.

  • First edition of exercise was held in Karaganda region of Kazakhstan in September 2016.

Indra-2017: Joint Indo-Russia Tri-Services Exercise Successfully Conducted

  • The Joint Indo-Russia Tri-Services Exercise INDRA-2017 was successfully conducted from 19 to 29 October 2017 at Vladivostok, Russia.

  • India’s first joint tri-services exercise and also first between Russia and India.

  • It was also first time Russia has hosted Tri-Services Exercise on its soil.

  • Conducted in Sergeevsky Combined Arms Training Range, Cape Klerk Training Area and in waters of Sea of Japan.

Sri Lankan Coast Guard Commissions OPV SURAKSHA Gifted by India

  • Sri Lankan Coast Guard commissioned Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) SURAKSHA gifted by India at Colombo port.

  • It is first OPV of Sri Lankan Coast Guard.

  • Sri Lankan Coast Guard Ship (SLCGS) Suraksha earlier belonged to Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and was known as Varuna.

  • It was officially handed over to Sri Lanka Navy at ceremony held at Kochi Port in India in September 2017.

Mitra Shakti 2017: India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise Held in Pune

  • “Mitra Shakti 2017”: 5th India Sri-Lanka joint training exercise

  • It was held Aundh Military Station in Pune, Maharashtra.

  • Two weeks exercise is based on Counter Terrorist Operations (CTO) and Infantry company from both countries are participating in it.

  • Aim of joint training: To exchange best of military practices of two countries and build strong military-to-military (M2M) relation between two armies.

V-409: Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) Interceptor Boat Launched

  • ICG new interceptor boat V-409 was launched in Mangaluru, Karnataka by Bharathi Defence and Infrastructure Limited (BDIL) .

  • V-409 interceptor boat has length of 28 meters, beam of 6 meters and draught of 1.2 meters.

Yudh Abhyas 2017: Joint India-US Military Exercise

  • 13th edition Yudh Abhyas 2017: A joint military training exercise between India and US.

  • It was held at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington, US.

  • Yudh Abhyas is annual bilateral military exercise, alternately held by two countries.

  • Armies of both countries honed tactical skills in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations (CICT ops) under UN charter.

Indian Navy’s Second LCU Mark IV L52 Ship Commissioned at Port Blair

  • Indian Navy’s 2nd CU (landing craft utility) Mark IV L52 ship was commissioned at Port Blair.

  • Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Shaurya was commission in Vasco, Goa.

  • It is an offshore patrol vessel designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL).

  • It is fifth of a series of six OPVs designed in-house and built by GSL.

  • It will be based at Chennai under administrative and operational control of Commander Coast Guard Region (East).

India’s First Private Missile Production Facility Unveiled in Hyderabad

  • Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS) plant: India’s first private sector missile sub-systems manufacturing facility KRAS plant was inaugurated near Hyderabad, capital of Telangana.

  • It is 51: 49 joint ventures between India’s Kalyani Group and Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd.

  • Aims: To be a one-stop solution provider to locally re-design, develop, re-engineer and manufacture various land and airborne products and systems in India.

Muntra: India’s First Unmanned Tank Rolled Out by DRDO

  • DRDO rolled out Muntra - India’s first unmanned, remotely operated tank at its Chennai lab.

  • Launched in three variants Muntra-S, Muntra-M and Muntra-N.

BrahMos Missile: Godrej Aero Gets New Contract for Missile Airframes

  • Godrej Aerospace won order from BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) for supply of additional 100 units airframe fuel management systems for BrahMos Air-Launched Cruise Missile.

  • Godrej Aerospace supplies airframes for land and sea versions of BrahMos missile to BrahMos Aerospace.

  • Both versions have been inducted by army and navy.
