Draft regulations for organic food products has been introduced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to ensure the authenticity of organic foods because of rising demand for organic food products.

Key Facts

  • So from now organic foods will have to match provisions of government which was created by Agriculture Ministry or any other standards notified by FSSAI the under National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) or the Participatory Guarantee System for India (PGS-India).
  • FSSAI also have asked for public suggestion regarding the provisions of the draft regulations.
  • Currently there is no any method is available to check the authenticity of the organic food products because of the absence of a regulatory framework.
  • Organic food products means those products which are grown without using any chemical fertilisers and made form organically produced raw materials.

  • And the draft regulations are meant to ensure the authenticity of organic food products which are sold in the market.
  • Definition of draft regulations are:

    • Organic agriculture

      • Which will describe the system of farm design and management without use of artificial inputs including chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides and synthetic hormones or genetically modified organisms, and it will be eco-system of agriculture production.
    • Organic foods

      • Organic food products which are produced based on the organic production standard.
    • Organic farm

      • Which produce the product came from organic agriculture.
