10 February is observed as National Deworming Day every year to combat parasitic worm infections among preschool and school-age children across India. This day was launched in 2015 by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) so this year is a second edition of the observance of this day.

Key facts:

Objective of National Deworming Day:

The main objective behind introduction of this day was to deworm all preschool and school-age children between the ages of 1 - 19 years to improve their:

  • overall health,
  • cognitive development,
  • nutritional status and
  • Quality of life.

Albendazole tablets are given to all targeted children on this day.

For 1 - 2 years children it will be half tablet and for 2 - 9 years child one full tablet.


The Union MoHFW has leaded the implementation of deworming programmes.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) under the Department of School Education and Literacy have also team up to implement the day.

Parasitic worms infestation:

  • Parasitic worms or Soil-Transmitted Helminthes (STH) is a most common infection across the world which causes parasitic infestation with nutrient uptake in small children.
  • STHs are live in human body and eat necessary nutrients required for the human body.
  • It can be reason behind many complications among the children such as anaemia, malnutrition and improper mental and physical development.
  • parasitic worms produce thousands of eggs each day and they are passed in human faces and spread to others by contaminating soil in areas where open defecation predominant and sanitation is poor.
