Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for India’s Economic Transformation was constituted on 24th August 2017. Task Force gave its report on 19th January 2018. NITI Aayog has identified 5 sectors that includes healthcare, agriculture, education, infrastructure, & transportation that can benefit from adoption of artificial intelligence.

Background on National Artificial Intelligence Mission

  • It was recommended that Inter-Ministerial National Artificial Intelligence Mission to act as nodal agency for coordinating AI related activities in India. Recommendations of Task Force are shared w/various Ministries & Departments of GoI.

  • NITI Aayog was tasked w/formulation of National Strategy Plan for AI in consultation w/Ministries & Departments concerned, academia, & private sector.

  • Aayog has proposed 2-tier structure to address research in India.

Advantages of AI

  • Application of AI to healthcare could increase access & affordability of quality healthcare while it can enhance farmers income, increase productivity & reduce wastage when used in agriculture.

  • In areas of education AI can improve access & quality of education while improving connectivity & safer modes of transportation when put to infrastructure & transportation sectors.

Committees for AI

  • Aiming to put AI to use for all & across sectors, Aayog has identified barriers that need to be addressed to achieve success in use of AI.

  • In order to create policy framework & to develop ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, has constituted 4 committees covering all aspects of AI.

  • These Committees are:

  • Committee on platforms & data for AI,

  • Committee on leveraging AI for identifying National Missions in key sectors,

  • Committee on mapping technological capabilities, key policy enablers, skilling, re-skilling & R&D

  • Committee on cybersecurity, safety, legal & ethical issues.
