With growing hydrocarbon engagement between India and Myanmar, the first consignment of 30 MT of High Speed Diesel was sent today from India to Myanmar. Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. (NRL) supplying HSD to Bangladesh, despatched the first diesel consignment to Myanmar.

  • Sent through NH 37 across the Moreh Custom Check Point on the Indian side and Tamu Custom Check Point on the Myanmar side.
  • Marks another step in enhancing hydrocarbon synergy with neighbouring countries and promoting India՚s Act East Policy.
  • NRL entered into agreement with Parami Energy Group of Companies to supply diesel and collaboration in the retail petroleum sector of Myanmar.
  • NRL refinery, situated at 420 km from the India-Myanmar border ideally suited to supply diesel to Northern Myanmar where connectivity is a challenge, particularly in the rainy season.
  • Future opportunities for collaboration in the oil and gas sector includes setting up of LNG terminal, retail marketing, refurbishment of refineries, participation in upstream sector and capacity building.
  • ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL) , GAIL India Ltd. and Oil India Ltd. with assets in the upstream sector and pipelines are strengthening the oil and gas engagement by setting up offices in Myanmar.
  • NRL has so far exported 1700 MT of Paraffin wax to Myanmar with India contributing handmade wax candles to the 2500 year old Shwedagon Pagoda earlier this year.

What is High Speed Diesel and Difference from Light Diesel Oil?

  • High speed diesel has good cetane number 56 - 60 whereas normal diesel has cetane number ranging from 45 - 55.
  • High speed diesel has better combustion characteristics achieving good performance and cleaner emissions
  • Again two grades of HSD are called BS-III & BS-IV. The main difference being sulphur content- for BS-III 350 ppm and BS-IV 50 ppm
