The first recipient of the is Pune based Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute has bagged first Prime Minister’s Yoga Award for their excellent contribution for development and promotion of Yoga, and the award was presented by PM Narendra Modi at International Day of Yoga celebrations in Chandigarh.

  • Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute is chosen for this award based on the recommendation made by Evaluation committee (Jury) under the Chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary.
  • The Ministry of AYUSH has made guidelines for the awards and also have made two committees which are:
  1. Screening committee (for preliminary evaluation)
  2. Evaluation committee (Jury)
  • Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute has beaten 85 nominations and other 15 institute suggested by the Screening Committee.

About Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute

  • Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute was founded in 1975 by well-known YogacharyaBellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar.
  • The Institutepromote Yoga both domestically and internationally from the time it was formed.
  • Many books on yoga had been launched by this institute which is translated into multiple languages.

21st June International Yoga Day:

  • The International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21st June.
  • It is secular and international event, total 135 countries including 40 Muslim nations has participate in this celebration in order to support this global event in India.
  • The main aim behind celebration of International Yoga Day is to spread awareness about yoga globally.
  • The logo of International Day of Yoga shows the folding of both hands which indicates ‘Yoga’ that is the union, which redirects the union of separate consciousness with worldwide consciousness, a seamless harmony between mind and body, man and nature – a holistic approach to health and well-being.
  • Earlier the ‘International day of Yoga’ on 21st June was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014 and has received extraordinary international support.
  • Around 175 nations, including the US, Canada and China had co-sponsored the resolve and creates history with the highest number of co-sponsors for any this kind of UNGA Resolution.
  • International Day of Yoga was introduced in 2015 as declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014.
  • The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN Address suggested the date of June 21, because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.
