1st project under Swadesh Darshan Scheme ‘North East Circuit: Imphal & Khongjom’ was inaugurated in Manipur. Project covers 2 sites i. e Kangla Fort & Khongjom in Manipur. Project was sanctioned by Ministry of Tourism in September 2015 for Rs. 72.30 Cr.

  • Under this project, Union Tourism Ministry has carried out works such as restoration & improvement of outer & inner moat of old Govindajee Temple & rejuvenation of sacred ponds, reconstruction of old rampart, among others.

Facts of Kangla Fort

  • Kangla Fort is one of most imp. historic & archaeological site of Manipur located in heart of capital city Imphal.

  • It had served as tradition seat of past Meetei rulers of Manipur till 1891.

  • Old Govindajee Temple is largest Hindu, Vaishnav temple in Imphal city in Manipur.

  • It is located next to Kangla Fort, palace of former rulers of then Manipur Kingdom.

  • Its outer & inner moat & other relics are perfect reflections of rich art & architectural heritage of Manipur.

  • Khongjom is historical Place of Manipur.

  • 36 km (22 mi) on Indo-Burmese road, war broke out b/w Manipur & British India in 1891.

  • It is here that Major General Paona Brajabashi, one of great warriors of Manipur proved his valor against superior force of invading British Army in 1891.

  • War Memorial is constructed on top of Kheba Hill.

  • 23 April is celebrated as Khongjom Day every year & is state holiday.

Swadesh Darshan Scheme

  • Scheme was inaugurated w/objective to develop theme-based tourist circuits in country.

  • Ministry has sanctioned 70 projects for Rs. 5708.88 cr. to 29 States & UTs under scheme.

  • These tourist circuits will be developed on principles of high tourist value, competitiveness & sustainability in integrated manner.

  • It is 100 % centrally funded scheme for project components undertaken for public funding.

  • It has provision for leveraging voluntary funding under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Central Public Sector Undertakings & corporate sector.

  • Funding of projects under this scheme vary from state to state. It is finalized on basis of detailed project reports prepared by Programme Management Consultant (PMC) which is national level consultant for implementing scheme.

  • Under this scheme 13 thematic circuits are identified:

    • Himalayan Circuit

    • Coastal Circuit, Krishna Circuit

    • Desert Circuit

    • Tribal Circuit

    • Eco Circuit

    • Wildlife Circuit
