Fiscal Deficit of States Soars Reaches to Rs 4.93 Trillion in FY16 (Download PDF)

The gross fiscal deficits of all the states have been reached to the Rs 4, 93, 360 crore in fiscal 2016 as per ’Handbook of Statistics on States 2016 - 17 a second edition of RBI’s statistical publication, which was Rs 18, 790 crore in FY1991.

Salient Highlights

  • ‘Handbook of Statistics on States 2016 - 17’ is based on ‘one-indicator-one table’ approach.
  • Handbook covers all sub-national statistics and fiscal indicators of the states such as socio- demographics, state domestic product, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, banking and many others during the period of 1950 - 51 to 2016 - 17.
  • The handbook also includes state-wise data on availability of power, per capita availability of power, installed capacity of power, and power requirement, the length of national highways, roads and state highways, and railheads.
  • In FY 91 Uttar Pradesh had a fiscal deficit of Rs 3, 070 crore which is reached at Rs 64, 320 crore in FY16 and it will be estimated to be reached at Rs 49, 960 crore in FY17.
  • In FY91 fiscal deficit of Rajasthan was Rs 540 crore which is reached to the Rs 67, 350 crore in FY16 and it is projected to decline to Rs 40, 530 crore in FY17.
  • In FY16 fiscal deficit of Maharashtra is reached to the Rs. 37, 950 crore which was at Rs. 1, 020 in FY91 and it is estimated to be at Rs 35, 030 crore in FY17.
  • In FY91 Gujarat has scored Rs 1, 800 which is increased and reaches to Rs. 22, 170 in FY16, which is projected to deteriorate in FY17 to Rs 24, 610 crore. In fact from FY01 no improvement was noticed in Gujarat.
  • Fiscal deficit of Andhra Pradesh was Rs 970 in FY91 which is deficit of Rs 17, 000 crore in FY16 and estimated to increase up to Rs 20, 500 crore in FY17.
  • Tamil Nadu is estimated to have a higher deficit at Rs 40, 530 crore in FY17 which is Rs 32, 320 crore in FY16 and Rs 1, 130 crore in FY91.
  • In FY16 Karnataka has scored Rs 20, 560 which was Rs 560 crore in FY91 and it is estimated to post higher deficit in FY17 at Rs 25, 660 crore.
  • Fiscal deficit of Bihar is Rs 28, 510 crore in FY16 which will be estimated to Rs 16, 010 crore in FY17 which was at Rs 15, 90 crore in FY91.
  • West Bengal will be improving its fiscal deficit to Rs 19, 360 crore in FY17 which is Rs 25, 180 in FY16 and Rs 1630 crore in FY91.
