Over 20 countries, including India, Brazil and France signed the framework agreement of the ISA. The framework agreement of ISA opened for signatures on the sidelines of CoP22 (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change- UNFCCC) at Marrakech, in Morocco.

International Solar Alliance & Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony
  • Agreement to be followed by ratifications by countries.
  • Operational after at least 15 countries have ratified it.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Holland at CoP21 in Paris jointly launched ISA in November 2015.
  • ISA is an alliance of 121 solar resource-rich tropical UN countries lying fully or partially between two tropics.
  • Calls for coordination through programmes and activities like solar finance, solar technologies, innovation, R&D, and capacity building achieving economies of scale.

What is Purpose of IsA?

  • A group of 120 countries geographically located in the tropics between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, either fully or partially.
  • Ample sunlight throughout the year makes them ideal places to harness solar energy.
  • Rapidly ramp up their electricity production using clean solar energy avoiding fossil fuels.
  • Accelerate the global demand for solar energy
  • India to take global leadership in the fight against climate change.
  • Boost global demand will result in reduction in prices of solar energy equipment- economies of scale.
  • Promote standardization in the use of equipment and processes for generating electricity, promoting competition and thereby further reducing equipment cost.
  • Standardization will also make the manufacturing of equipment and other hardware cheaper.
