India brought 13, 117 hectare (ha) under new coconut plantation b/w mid-2014 & 2018, vis-a-vis 9, 561 ha b/w 2010 & 2014. Productivity increased to 11, 516 fruits per ha in 2017 - 18 vis-a-vis 10, 122 in 2013 - 14.

  • Over last 4 years, country has made unprecedented progress in coconut cultivation, & now it has become leading country in both production & productivity of fruit.

Growth in Coconut Exports

  • Owing to increase in production of coconut, India is exporting coconut oil to Malaysia, Indonesia & Sri Lanka since April 2017.
  • Till March 2017, India imported it. For 1st time, country is exporting dry coconut in large quantities to US & European countries.
  • In 2017 - 18, India exported coconut worth Rs. 1, 602.38 cr. , while imports stood at Rs. 259.70 cr.
  • Income from export of coconut products stands at Rs. 6, 448 cr. b/w 2014 & 2018, as against Rs. 3, 975 cr. b/w 2004 & 2014.

Scientific Coconut Farming

  • In coconut-producing states, 62, 403 ha are brought under scientific coconut farming methods as compared to 36, 477 ha in 2010 - 14. It is noteworthy that coconut cultivation has spread in new areas.

  • B/w 2014 & 2018, 5, 115 coconut production committees, 430 coconut growers’ federations & 67 coconut producing companies were constituted.
  • B/w 2010 & 2014, corresponding numbers were 4, 467, 305 & 15, respectively.

Friends of Coconut Tree Program

  • Under Friends of Coconut Tree, skill development programme for coconut sector, 33, 228 unemployed youths are trained as compared to 27, 770 b/w 2004 & 2014.
  • The Coconut Development Board gave image makeover for coconut plucking by launching the “Friends of Coconut Tree” programme to train unemployed youth in the art of climbing coconut trees and caring for them.
  • This was to alleviate acute shortage of manpower for plucking coconuts and caring for the trees.

Aims of Friends of Coconut Tree Program

  • It aims to train about 5, 000 unemployed youth in this specialised skill and create a pool of trained personnel across the 10 coconut-growing districts of Kerala.
  • Training will be in tree climbing, coconut harvesting, crown clearing and pest control operations.
  • Pollination and hybridisation techniques, plant protection measures and identification of tender, mature and seed coconuts will also be taught.
