Aadhaar card will be mandatory for availing cooking gas (LPG) subsidies from November 2016 by the Union Government. Union Petroleum Ministry has requested Oil marketing companies (OMCs) to quickly enroll all consumers with aadhar card for LPG subsidy.

  • Government is giving 12 LPG cylinders at subsidized rates to eligible household in a year through PDS.
  • The LPG cylinder subsidy is directly transferred to the bank accounts of households when they buy the cooking fuel at market rates.

Why the Need of Compulsory Aadhar?

  • The LPG Subsidy (PAHAL) is India’s PDS for LPG or cooking gas.
  • Aadhar provides a unique identity for each Indian making it useful for simplifying the delivery of government services/subsidies/benefits
  • Making aadhar mandatory will increase transparency and efficiency in the service delivery processes by plugging leakages. It will also facilitate beneficiaries to get their entitlements from Government directly in their accounts without obstruction or corruption by any middlemen.

About Aadhaar

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is a central government agency of India committed to the former Planning Commission of India, now the NITI Aayog .
  • Aadhar card is liked to biometric and demographic data of residents, stored in a centralized database.
  • Aadhar is a 12 - digit unique identity number called Aadhaar to each resident.
  • It is World’s largest national identification project.

Along with this Aadhar will also Link with Caste and Domicile Certificates under the purview of state governments (June 2016).
