The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) launched ‘Ganga Gram’ project for sanitation based integrated development of all 4470 villages along the River Ganga with funds from NRIs to support the various Ganga projects.

  • Ganga Gram vision is an integrated approach for holistic development of villages situated on the banks of River Ganga with active participation of the villagers.
  • The project is a step after achieving ODF target in Ganga Villages for implementation of solid and liquid waste management and other integrated activities.
  • Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation will be the nodal agency for implementation of the Ganga Gram Project.

Background

  • Earlier in August 2017, all five Ganga States (Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal) declared the 4,470 Ganga Grams Open Defecation Free (ODF) .
  • The Ministry is also the nodal Ministry for the Government՚s, Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • Subsequent to making all Ganga Bank villages ODF, the Ministry and State Governments identified 24 villages to be taken up as a pilot project to transform them into Ganga Grams.
  • These Ganga grams will set the benchmark of cleanliness and integrated effort of development. These will be converted into Ganga Grams by 31st December 2018.

Implementation of Ganga Gram

  • An Advisory Board has been created as a policy framing and decision-making body under the chair of Minister for Drinking Water and sanitation.
  • Another Committee has been constituted as Project Committee for project supervision, implementation, and co-ordination.
