Gauri Lankesh First Indian to Win Anna Politkovskaya Award & CNR Rao Selected for Von Hippel Award

Late Kannada journalist Gauri Lankesh was awarded “Reach All Women in WAR” (RAW in WAR) Anna Politkovskaya Award. Eminent Scientist and Bharat Ratna Prof C. N. R. Rao was awarded 2017 Von Hippel Award, the highest international prize in materials research.

  • Gauri Lankesh became first Indian to receive this honour for being strident critic of religious extremism.

  • RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in WAR) annually presents the Anna Politkovskaya Award to female human rights defender from conflict zone who stood up for the victims of this conflict at great personal risk.
  • RAW in WAR is a London-based, non-governmental organisation (NGO) supporting women human rights defenders and victims of war.

  • Instituted by Materials Research Society (MRS) - organisation with members in 90 countries.
  • Named after Arthur von Hippel (1898 - 2003) , a pioneer in study of dielectrics, semiconductors, ferromagnetic, and ferroelectrics. He
  • Award recognizes brilliance and originality of intellect with vision across conventional scientific disciplines.
  • Award includes a $ 10,000 cash prize, honorary membership in MRS, and trophy with mounted ruby laser crystal symbolizing the many-faceted nature of materials research.
