India ranked at 52nd position among the 129 nations based on 80 indicators in Global Innovation Index 2019. In 2018 India’s rank was 57. India’s rank has been consistently improving. It jumped from 57th position to 52nd in this year. Switzerland is in the first position in the index followed by Sweden, the United States. In Global Innovation Index the countries are being ranked as per their success and capacity in innovation being published yearly by the World Intellectual Property.

GII Preview

  • World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) publishes the Global innovation index (GII) Report.

  • This report is published annually based on the capacity for and success in the field of innovation.

  • There is a similar index called Global competitive Report which is published by World Economic Forum.

  • In India we have India innovation index (III) which is published by the NITI Aayog according to III Karnataka is the most innovative city in India.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

  • The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a United Nations agency charged with protecting intellectual property (IP) through an international system that promotes and sustain creativity and innovation and helps develop international economics.

  • WIPO helps government, business and society to realize the benefits of IP by providing a policy forum to shape balanced international IP rules for a changing world.

  • It also provides global services to protect IP across borders and resolve disputes related to intellectuals properties.
