Global Wind Report-2021

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) dated 25,2021 released Global Wind Report 2021. This report highlights wind power՚s role on the road to net zero. The COP 26 is to be held in November 2021.

Wind Energy Business Opportunities in India

Report Overview

  • In history for the global wind industry, 2020 was the best year.
  • Over the past decade, the global wind power market has nearly quadrupled in size.
  • Important to increase the speed of new wind power installations:
    • To achieve the global climate goals.
    • To limit global warming to below 2 degrees.
  • The new installations would be likely before the next decade and would be three times higher as compared to the pre-industrial levels.
  • Installation of almost 93 GW of the new capacity by 2020.
  • Global cumulative wind power capacity up to 743 GW has been brought by the 93 GW of new installations. 1.1 billion tonnes of CO2 are likely to be reduced annually.
  • To limit global warming, the world needs to install a minimum of 180 GW of new wind energy.
  • By 2050, the net emission target has to be met.
  • For new onshore additions, China and the US remained the world՚s largest markets.
    • Together increased their market share by 15% to 76% .
    • Driven by the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) cut-off in China.
    • Scheduled phase-out w. r. t the full-rate Production Tax Credit (PTC) in the USA.
  • Year 2020 was also a record year for onshore installations in Asia Pacific on the regional level.
  • Grid infrastructures need to be scaled up.
  • Except Europe and Africa & Middle East, all regions increased new installations.

Power-to-X

  • Set to become one of the breakthrough solutions.
  • Dispatch green power to different end-use sectors.
  • Reducing the dependency on fossil fuels from heating to manufacturing.

Wind Power in India

  • A new renewable energy target of 175 GW by 2022, includes the 60 GW onshore wind energy as well.
  • The wind power has significantly increased recently.
  • The total installed wind power capacity was 38.789 GW (fourth largest installed wind power capacity in the world) , as of Feb 2021.
  • The capacity is mainly spread across:
    • Southern
    • Western
    • Northern regions
  • There has been a continuous decrease in terms of wind power costs.
  • The applicable guidelines for tariff-based wind power auctions were announced by the union govt. in December 2017:
    • Bring in more clarity.
    • Minimise the risk to the developers.
  • Major producers of wind energy in India:
    • Renew Power
    • Sembcorp Green Infra
    • Alfanar and Adani Green Energy

Global Wind Energy Council

  • This council was established in 2005.
  • To provide a credible and representative forum w. r. t the entire wind energy sector (at an international level) .
  • The mission is to make sure that the wind power gets established as one of the world՚s leading energy sources.
  • To provide substantial environmental and economic benefits.
