Frozen Semen Station is being set up in Maranga, Purnea in Bihar under Rashtriya Gokul Mission w/100 % contribution from Central Govt. 300 high genetic merit bulls will be kept at station & 50 lakh semen dose will be produced per year.

Details of the Project

  • Frozen semen station in Purnea will be 1st state-of-the-art semen production center of the country.
  • Center will develop highly modern bull shade, semen processing lab, feed & godown, agricultural equipment, & other facilities.
  • Currently, artificial insemination is being done by CMOFED (Sudha) in Bihar. For artificial insemination, semen from high genetic merit bulls is needed. Semen station will play role in rapidly increasing milk productivity of cows & buffaloes in state.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission

  • Union GoI launched Rashtriya Gokul Mission (a nationwide scheme) on 28th July 2014 to promote conservation & developments of indigenous breeds of cows in focused & scientific manner.

  • Mission is focused project under National Programme for Bovine Breeding & Dairy Development.

  • Mission was launched in New Delhi by Union Agriculture Minister Radhamohan Singh.

Aim & Objective of Mission

  • Development & conservation of indigenous breeds

  • Undertake breed improvement programme for indigenous cattle breeds to improve genetic makeup & increase stock

  • It aims at enhancing milk production & productivity

  • Up gradation non-descript cattle using elite indigenous breeds like Gir, Sahiwal, Rathi, Deoni, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi & others

  • Distribution of disease free high genetic merit bulls for natural service

To run project, govt. has allocated 150 cr. rupees for fiscal 2014 - 15. Project has outlay of 500 cr. rupees during 12th 5 year programme.

Fund Allocation under Scheme

  • Establishment of Integrated Indigenous Cattle Centres viz Gokul Gram

  • Strengthening of bull mother farms to conserve high genetic merit Indigenous Breeds

  • Establishment of Field Performance Recording (FPR) in breeding tract

  • Assistance to Institutions/Institutes which are repositories of best germplasm

  • Implementation of Pedigree Selection Programme for Indigenous Breeds w/large population

  • Establishment of Breeder’s Societies: Gopalan Sangh

  • Distribution of disease free high genetic merit bulls for natural service

  • Incentive to farmers maintaining elite animals of indigenous breeds;

  • Heifer rearing programmes; award to Farmers (Gopal Ratna) & Breeders’ Societies (Kamadhenu)

  • Organization of Milk Yield Competitions for indigenous breeds

  • Organization of Training Programme for technical and non-technical personnel working at Institute/Institutions engaged in indigenous cattle development

Implementation of Rashtriya Gokul Mission

  • Rashtriya Gokul Mission will be implemented thru State Implementing Agency (SIA viz Livestock Development Boards, LDBs).

  • Funds of scheme will be allocated for establishment of Integrated Indigenous Cattle Centre, Gokul Gram.

  • State Gauseva Ayogs will be given mandate to sponsor proposals to SIA (LDBs) & monitor implementation of sponsored proposal.

  • All Agencies having role in indigenous cattle development will be “Participating Agencies” like CFSPTI, CCBFs, ICAR, Universities, Colleges, NGO’s, Cooperative Societies & Gaushalas w/best germplasm.

Economic Perspective of Rashtriya Gokul Mission

Gokul Gram will be institute that will generate economic resources thru sale of

  • Milk

  • Organic manure

  • Vermi-composting

  • Urine distillates

  • Production of electricity from bio gas for in house consumption

  • Sale of animal products

These activities will make Gokul Grams as self-sustaining organisation.

What Are Gokul Grams? (Important)

Under mission Indigenous Cattle Centres or Gokul Grams will be established in breeding tracts of indigenous breeds.

Gokul Grams will be set up in PPP mode & will be established in

  • Native breeding tracts

  • Near metropolitan cities for housing urban cattle

Gokul Gram will function as state of the art in situ training centre for Farmers, Breeders & MAITRI’s.

Metropolitan Gokul Gram will focus on genetic upgradation of urban cattle.

These Grams will have capacity of 1000 animals will have unproductive animals along w/productive ones in ratio of 60: 40. These Gokul Grams will have house fodder production to meet Nutritional requirements of animals.

How Animals Will Be Kept Free from Diseases?

  • To keep breeds free from disease, regular screening of animals will be done for important diseases like JD, TB & brucellosis. Apart from this, Gokul Gram will have inbuilt dispensary & AI Centre.
  • Union Agriculture Ministry will convene meeting of State Animal Husbandry Ministers on 16th Sept. 2014 to successfully implement mission & work out modalities.
