Google dedicated a Doodle to mark the 186th birth anniversary of India’s 19th century social reformer Savitribai Jyotirao Phule. She was a social reformer and poet. She has been given recognition in the list of important figures in Maharashtra’s social reform movements.

About Savitribai Phule

  • Born: January 3, 1831, Satara district
  • Full name: Savitribai Jyotirao Phule
  • At the age of nine, she was married to twelve-year-old Jyotirao Phule in 1840.
  • Savitribai worked as both an educational reformer and social reformer, especially for women.
  • She was taught to read and write by her husband
  • She was one of the very few indigenous literate women of that time.
  •  She played a full part in her husband’s social reform movement by becoming a teacher in the schools.
  • During the British rule in India, the Phule couple had launched a crusade against social discrimination based on caste and gender, and also had sparked the flame for women’s equal rights.
  • Even after death of Jyotirao Phule in 1890, she carried on legacy of his Satyashodhak.
  • She died while serving people suffering from bubonic plague in Maharashtra in 1897.
  • India Post had released a stamp in honour of Savitribai on March 10, 1998.
