The Centre has accorded the highest priority to Railways safety with Rs. 73, 065 crore (out of an investment of Rs. 148, 528 crore) allotted for 2018 - 19 for the period- to transform Railways into a modern, safe, green, affordable, and comfortable transport.

Details of Funds

The investment includes

  • budgetary support of Rs. 53, 060 crore

  • internal resources of Rs. 11, 500 crore

  • IRFC (Indian Railway Finance Corporation) to raise Rs. 28, 500 crore

  • Institutional Finance (LIC) to support with Rs. 26, 440 crore

  • investment through PPP of Rs. 27, 000 crore

Proposed Safety Measures

The safety measure taken are

  • elimination of unmanned level crossings on all busy routes

  • shift to production of safer LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches

  • track renewal with the highest outlay ever

  • total electrification in the next three-four years

  • establishment of Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK)

How Will Electrification Help?

  • An estimated saving of Rs. 10, 000 crore per annum

  • Reduce carbon emissions

  • promote sustainable development

  • increase India’s energy security by saving foreign exchange on imported fuels

Current Work

  • 18, 000 km of doubling, third, and fourth line works.

  • 5, 000 km of gauge conversion would augment capacity.

  • Transform entire network into broad gauge.

  • Metros like Mumbai with 90 kms line doubling of around and 150 kilometers of additional suburban network being planned for Mumbai

  • Building of 160 kms suburban network worth Rs. 17, 000 cr in Bengaluru

  • 600 stations to be developed with world class facilities.

  • Escalators to be provided at all stations with passenger footfall above 25, 000.

  • Wi-fi facility at stations for information and entertainment.

  • Enhance safety and security of passengers- CCTV cameras across all stations and trains.
