Hyderabad has been selected as a creative city in the category of gastronomy on 31st October 2019, the day being celebrated as World Cities Day by UNESCO. This year 66 cities were added to UNESCO network of Creative cities. Changing the World: Innovations and Better Life for Future Generations, is the theme of this year’s celebration. The city of Hyderabad is among the 66 cities named by the UNESCO in the list of new creative cities with an aim to push the sustainable development goals through innovative thinking and action.

Overview of UNESCO Network of Creative Cities

  • The system of celebrating world cities day started from 2004 in order to promote cooperation among cities to identify creativity as a strategic factor.

  • Under the UNESCO network of Creative cities, the cities are broadly categorized into 7 categories namely Craft and Folk Art, Media Arts, Films, Design, Gastronomy, Literature, Music.

  • Hyderabad has been chosen in the category of gastronomy similarly Mumbai is also chosen for the Film category.

  • The designation of Hyderabad in the creative cities list which bring new opportunities and turn the focus on the city’s rich culinary Heritage and tradition.

  • Once these cities join the network of creative cities they share their best practices and develop partnership with other cities which involves public as well as private sector.

  • This network also includes civil society and tries to create sustainable development goals.

  • Previously cities like Chennai, Varanasi and Jaipur which were part of network of creative cities.

  • The cities like Chennai and Varanasi are in category of music and Jaipur is in the category of crafts and folk arts.
