IAE to Tie Up with India for Its Global LED Programme (Download PDF)

International Energy Agency (IAE/ IEA) is going to collaborate with India to implement the government of India’s Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) initiative universally for energy savings. International Energy Agency has been impressed with performance of India’s UJALA programme in terms of hugely improving access to LED lighting while reducing their cost drastically.

  • LED bulbs have a very long life almost 50 times more than ordinary bulbs.
  • LED bulbs are 8 to10 times more energy efficient that of CFLs.
  • LED bulbs are however more expensive.

Key Aspects:

  • UJALA scheme is implemented by Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of Power.
  • The price at which EESL has been purchasing LED lights to distribute under UJALA scheme has been constantly falling over the last couple of years.
  • 10 lakh per month production in 2014 has been ramped up to 4 crore to support the implementation of scheme.

About Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme

  • UJALA was launched by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 1st  May, 2015.
  • LED-based Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP).
  • Support efficient lighting, reducing energy consumption and energy savings.
  • “Bachat Lamp Yojana” was replaced by UJALA scheme in March 2016.
  • Efficient Lighting Programme first launched in Puducherry on 7th February, 2014.
  • UJALA scheme promotes LED bulbs over tube lights, incandescent bulbs and CFL bulbs, as they are long lasting, more efficient, and economical in their life cycle duration.
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stopped the subsidy on CFL-based solar lighting system because they want to encourage the people to maximum use of the LED Bulbs.

  • IEA is a Paris-based autonomous non-governmental organisation.
  • IEA was established in 1974. It was established to meet the industrial countries ’energy organisation needs.
  • Only  Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member states can become the members of the IEA.
